Role Overview
We are looking for an Editor to work closely with the Commissioning Editor and play a central role in shaping our books at every stage of the editorial process. This is a hands-on role focused on manuscript development, line editing, and copy, with opportunities to contribute to commissioning and list building over time.
The ideal candidate combines strong editorial craft with sharp attention to detail, and is excited to help refine manuscripts into polished, publish-ready books.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Development
Work closely with authors on manuscript development, including structural edits, line editing, and overall narrative refinement. Help shape manuscripts into compelling, cohesive, and high-quality final products.
Copyediting & Proofing
Ensure clarity, consistency, and accuracy across manuscripts. Oversee copyediting and proofreading stages, maintaining the highest editorial standards.
Project Management
Manage titles through the editorial workflow—from manuscript to final files—coordinating timelines with authors, freelancers, and internal teams.
Support Commissioning
Assist the Commissioning Editor in evaluating submissions, reader reports, and early-stage manuscripts. Contribute to identifying promising new voices and ideas.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with design, production, and marketing teams to ensure editorial intent is carried through to packaging, positioning, and launch.
Quality & Consistency
Uphold the voice and standards of The Bombay Circle Press across all titles, ensuring each book reflects both editorial rigor and readability.
Who You Are
- 1-2 years of editorial experience in trade publishing
- Strong grounding in developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting
- A precise, detail-oriented editor with a strong sense of language, structure, and voice
- Comfortable working across genres, including fiction and narrative nonfiction
- Organized and deadline-driven, with the ability to manage multiple manuscripts simultaneously
- A collaborative team player who enjoys working closely with authors and internal teams
Bonus If You
- Have experience supporting acquisitions or writing reader reports
- Have worked with debut authors and understand early-stage manuscript development
- Are familiar with style guides and editorial workflows across print and digital formats
