Job Title: HIGH SCHOOL LATIN TEACHER 0.4 - 0.6 FTE
Deliver engaging, proficiency-based Latin instruction that builds students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while fostering cultural awareness and global competence. This role requires differentiated, developmentally-appropriate instruction, effective classroom management, collaboration with colleagues and families, and active participation in curriculum development, assessment, and school-wide initiatives.
Qualifications:
- State of Michigan Teaching Certificate (required) - Latin, FD endorsement
- Latin Major (preferred)
- Proficiency in all modalities of the Latin language (required)
- Conversational Latin skills (preferred)
- Experience teaching high school students (preferred)
- Experience teaching high school Latin (preferred)
- Experience in Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) & Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) (preferred)
- Strong background in using assessment and data to inform instruction and document student progress (preferred)
- Successful classroom management strategies and skills (preferred)
Essential Functions:
- Knowledge of instructional practices for varied learning styles and individual student needs
- Ability to work cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators
- Ability to motivate and inspire high school students
- Ability to provide instruction in Latin grammar, syntax, and vocabulary to support accurate reading, translation, and basic composition
- Knowledge of classical Latin literature and the ability to guide students through translation, analysis, and interpretation of foundational texts
- Knowledge and understanding of Roman culture and the ability to provide instruction on daily life, history, and mythology
- Ability to transform instruction through the creative use of technology
- Ability to deliver differentiated instruction and teach subject content in an integrated manner
- Ability to be enthusiastic and flexible
- Excellent organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, and listening skills)
- Willingness and commitment to participate in curriculum development, school improvement committees, and professional development opportunities
- Experience utilizing a variety of assessments to inform teaching
- Ability to design and deliver developmentally appropriate instruction for high school learners
- Willingness and ability to contribute to a team-based approach to planning and school-wide initiatives
- Appreciation for diversity and a desire to assist all students in becoming cross-culturally competent
- Willingness and ability to maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance
- Ability to complete other duties as assigned
