Key Responsibilities of a Duty Dentist
- Emergency Care: Diagnosing and treating acute pain, performing emergency tooth extractions, and managing dental infections (e.g., abscesses).
- Diagnostic Assessments: Conducting urgent oral screenings, interpreting X-rays, and assessing tooth trauma.
- Restorative Procedures: Performing emergency fillings, stabilizing broken teeth, and managing dental appliances.
- Pain Management: Administering anesthetics and prescribing medications (painkillers/antibiotics) to manage infection and discomfort.
- Patient Education: Advising patients on immediate post-treatment care and managing temporary restorative measures.
Typical Requirements
- Education: A Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry (DMD).
- Licensure: Active, current dental license in good standing in the relevant jurisdiction.
- Skills: Ability to work under pressure, proficiency in surgical extractions, and strong diagnostic skills.
- Flexibility: Willingness to work evening, weekend, or on-call shifts.
