Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU), the world’s leading wetland and waterfowl conservation organization, is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join a team of highly motivated conservation Biologists and Engineers responsible for the planning, design, and construction of diverse wetland and wildland restoration projects in the Great Salt Lake area. The Engineer will be a Manager-scheduled hybrid environment located in Northern Utah, with frequent time spent in the Salt Lake City area. The Engineer will be part of the larger Ducks Unlimited Western Region team of conservation professionals headquartered in Rancho Cordova, CA, that covers nine states (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Utah, California, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii).


Qualifications

 

Candidates must have, at minimum, a B.S. in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline and be a licensed professional Civil Engineer in the state of Utah, or ability to obtain Utah licensure within nine (9) months of hire through comity. The Engineer should have approximately ten (10) years of progressive engineering experience. Desirable qualifications include experience with irrigation conveyance and infrastructure design, hydraulic structure and levee/canal design, GPS surveying, Civil 3D, hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) modeling, construction inspection and management, and soil science. Demonstrated oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are essential after the hire date.


Candidates must be initiative-taking, goal-oriented, and able to work with and solve problems in close team-based relationships. Candidates must be able to perform fieldwork that may include strenuous outdoor activity in difficult environmental conditions. Completion of safety training for small boats and all-terrain vehicle operation will be required after the hire date.


Responsibilities

Regional Engineers perform a full range of project planning, design, contracting, and construction management functions on wetland, riparian, and associated habitat restoration projects. This position functions as a lead engineer, responsible for independently managing projects from initial scoping through construction and closeout. A close working relationship with DU Biologists and Engineers located in Salt Lake City, other DU staff, local, state, and federal agency personnel, private landowners, and other conservation partners is an important aspect of the job. The position will primarily include travel throughout northern Utah and may at times include limited travel to Idaho, Washington, Nevada, and Oregon.


Specific duties include:

  • Prepare project scope of work and budgets for funding proposals.
  • Develop topographic surveys, including the collection of field survey data for design.
  • Prepare project designs including plans, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Prepare bid documents, conduct pre-bid site meetings, and final contractor selection.
  • Conduct field inspections and perform construction management oversight.
  • Provide QA/QC reviews of other staff designs.
  • Ensure that consultants and contractors adhere to project plans, specifications, and schedules.
  • Conduct water measurement and monitoring activities.
  • Function as a contracting officer to ensure contract compliance and budget management.
  • Mentor junior staff.
