The Department of Mechanical Engineering at BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus invites applications for a fully funded Joint PhD position in collaboration with RMIT University, Australia.
The selected candidate will work under the joint supervision of Dr. Saurabh Tiwari (BITS Pilani Goa) and Prof. Bahman Shabani (RMIT University) on cutting-edge research in hydrogen energy systems.

Title: Metal Hydride Hydrogen Storage Thermal Management Optimization
This research project focuses on:
- Thermal management challenges in metal hydride hydrogen storage systems
- Development of analytical models and numerical simulations
- Experimental validation of hydrogen storage performance
- Design optimization for enhanced heat and mass transfer
Key Responsibility:
- Conduct advanced research in hydrogen storage and thermal systems
- Develop mathematical models and CFD simulations (e.g., COMSOL/ANSYS)
- Design and perform experimental investigations
- Publish research in high-impact international journals
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across BITS and RMIT
- Contribute to project reporting and research dissemination
Eligibility Criteria:
Minimum Qualification
Applicants must meet one of the following:
- Master’s degree (MTech/ME/MSc or equivalent)
- OR
- 4-year Bachelor’s degree (BTech/BEng with honours)
Academic Requirements
- Minimum Distinction (≥70%) or equivalent
- Examples:
- CGPA ≥ 8/10 (India)
- CGPA ≥ 3.2/4
- Final year performance must meet distinction level
Preferred Background
- Mechanical Engineering / Energy Engineering / Chemical Engineering / Materials Science
- Knowledge of:
- Heat transfer & thermodynamics
- Hydrogen energy systems
- Numerical modelling (CFD/FEA tools)
- Prior research experience (thesis/publications) is highly desirable
