The R Kaldo Furnace DMT member is responsible for operating and monitoring the Kaldo furnace during multi-stage refining processes (first and second refining). This includes charging of raw materials, smelting, refining impurities, and tapping molten metal and slag. The role ensures safe, efficient, and consistent production of refined metals according to quality standards and production targets.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations during shift operations. Promote a safety culture by implementing and enforcing safety practices in DMT.
Furnace Operations: Furnace Charging: Prepare and charge raw materials, concentrates, fluxes, scrap metal, and additives into the Kaldo furnace as per process instructions. Ensure correct charging sequence and material ratios to initiate smelting efficiently. Operate charging equipment and verify loading accuracy using batch sheets.First Refining Stage:Remove primary impurities (e.g., sulfur, iron) by controlling oxygen lancing, furnace rotation, and slag formation.Sample molten bath periodically and adjust refining parameters based on lab feedback. Skim slag effectively to ensure metal quality and minimize losses.Second Refining Stage:Conduct final refining to meet specific chemical specifications for the target metal. Add refining agents and adjust oxygen flow to achieve desired impurity removal (e.g., arsenic, lead).Ensure final product meets metallurgical and customer quality requirements. Tapping Operations: Perform controlled tapping of molten metal and slag at designated intervals. Ensure tapping equipment and ladles are preheated and positioned correctly. Monitor tapping temperature, metal flow, and cleanliness to minimize contamination and material loss.
Maintenance Management: Maintain cleanliness around the furnace area; prevent material build-up and spillage. Conduct visual inspections and perform minor maintenance on furnace components (refractory lining, rotators). Report faults or abnormal conditions to maintenance and supervisors promptly.
Reporting and Documentation: Record production data, including quantities processed, temperature readings, and any operational issues.
