Role & Responsibilities
The Dialysis Technician is a specialized allied healthcare professional responsible for operating and maintaining hemodialysis machines for patients with acute or chronic end-stage renal disease (ESRD). They work under the direct supervision of Nephrologists and Registered Nurses to ensure safe, effective, and sterile dialysis treatments while providing critical physical and emotional support to patients.

- Key Responsibilities
- Pre-Dialysis Patient Care & Setup
- Evaluate patient vitals before the procedure (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration).
- Record the patient's pre-dialysis weight to calculate fluid removal targets.
- Set up the dialysis machine: assemble the extracorporeal circuit, install tubing, prime the dialyzer with saline, and test all machine alarms and monitors.
- Intra-Dialysis Procedures
- Perform aseptic cannulation of the AV Fistula, AV Graft, or assist with central venous catheters to initiate blood flow.
- Administer routine dialysis medications as prescribed (e.g., Heparin to prevent clotting, normal saline).
- Continuously monitor the patient and the machine during the 3 to 4-hour procedure. This includes adjusting blood flow rates, fluid removal rates, and responding instantly to machine alarms (like venous pressure drops or air bubbles).
- Identify and manage common intra-dialysis emergencies, such as sudden hypotension (low blood pressure), muscle cramps, or nausea.
- Post-Dialysis & Maintenance
- Aseptically decannulate the patient and ensure complete hemostasis (stoppage of bleeding) at the access site.
- Record post-dialysis vitals and weight to ensure treatment goals were met.
- Disinfect and clean the dialysis machine and patient chair according to strict biomedical waste disposal and infection control protocols.
- Manage dialyzer reprocessing (both manual and automated using machines like Renatron) if the facility reuses dialyzers.
- Monitor and maintain the Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment plant to ensure the water used for dialysis is completely ultra-pure.
- Educational Qualifications
- Diploma: Diploma in Dialysis Technology
- Bachelor’s Degree: B.Sc. in Renal Dialysis Technology
- Karnataka Paramedical Council registration is mandatory.
