About the Role
At Agivant, we're looking for a DevOps Image Engineer who enjoys building clean, reliable infrastructure from the ground up. You'll join a focused, fast-moving engineering POD with a clear mission: delivering a polished library of production-ready OS images for a leading global hosting provider.
Every two weeks, you'll ship hardened, fully configured Linux images — automating everything from base OS creation and security hardening to pre-loading complex software stacks (LAMP, LEMP, Docker, Kubernetes, WordPress). You'll own the full image lifecycle: writing the code, validating the output, publishing to OpenStack Glance, and standing behind what you ship with L3 production support.
If you take pride in zero-defect releases and want your work to directly power hosting infrastructure at scale, this role is built for you.
What You'll Be Doing
- Write and maintain Packer templates (HCL) and configuration scripts (Bash/Ansible) to fully automate creation of base and enriched OS images, including VPS templates with cloud-init integration ready for multi-tenant provisioning.
- Harden Linux distributions (Ubuntu, CentOS, AlmaLinux) using CIS benchmarks and security best practices before anything ships.
- Install, tune, and validate software stacks on base images — web servers (Apache, Nginx), databases (MySQL, MariaDB), languages (PHP, Node.js), and CMS platforms (WordPress, Joomla).
- Wire builds into CI/CD pipelines for fully automated, zero-touch publishing to OpenStack Glance.
- Build automated smoke tests (Goss, InSpec, or custom scripts) covering boot integrity, network configuration, and service availability.
- Own L3 escalations — diagnose P1/P2 incidents, apply hotfixes, and keep shipped images healthy.
- Deliver consistently in Agile sprints: stand-ups, planning, retrospectives, and a steady cadence of 2 production-ready images per sprint.
Requirements
What We're Looking For
Must-Have
- 4+ years in DevOps, cloud infrastructure, or senior Linux systems administration.
- Proven hands-on experience building and managing VPS templates, including cloud-init configuration and multi-tenant provisioning readiness — this is a core requirement.
- Strong working knowledge of HashiCorp Packer (HCL) and Git.
- Practical OpenStack experience, specifically image management via Glance.
- Advanced Linux administration across Debian/Ubuntu and RHEL-based systems — boot processes, systemd, networking, and package management.
- Proficiency in Shell/Bash scripting and a configuration management tool (Ansible preferred; Chef or Puppet acceptable).
- Real, hands-on experience configuring and tuning LAMP and LEMP stacks.
- Ability to install and configure Docker and Kubernetes (kubelet, kubeadm, kubectl) environments.
- Strong debugging instincts — you can trace kernel panics, read system logs, and close L3 tickets independently.
Nice to Have
- Experience with infrastructure testing frameworks (ServerSpec, InSpec, Goss).
Background in web hosting or large-scale, multi-tenant image registry management
