About the Role
Responsible for design, planning, and implementation of advanced plumbing and firefighting systems for data center operations, ensuring compliance with stringent industry standards. This role requires strong technical expertise, design management capabilities, and the ability to coordinate across consultants, statutory authorities, contractors, and internal engineering teams in a fast‑paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design management and design review process for plumbing and fire protection systems, ensuring alignment with project requirements and stakeholder expectations.
- Design plumbing and firefighting systems, including water supply, drainage, fire suppression (FM‑200, Inergen, CO₂, water mist), fire alarms, and sprinklers for data center facilities.
- Develop detailed drawings and layouts using CAD/BIM software, ensuring system functionality, efficiency, and compliance with safety standards.
- Ensure designs comply with local, national, and international building codes and safety standards, including NFPA, IPC, and data center‑specific standards (e.g., Uptime Institute’s Tier Classification).
- Perform hydraulic calculations, water flow analysis, and sizing of pumps, pipes, fire suppression systems, and related components to ensure proper operation within data center environments.
- Collaborate with the MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) team and other engineering disciplines to ensure seamless integration of plumbing and fire protection systems into the overall data center design.
- Manage consultant coordination and provide technical direction to external design partners.
- Interface with statutory officials and regulatory bodies to secure approvals and ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.
- Provide support to in‑house test‑fit and feed engineering teams ensuring design intent is translated effectively into execution.
- Deliver construction administration support including site inspections, design clarifications, and technical guidance during execution.
- Handle contractor queries and RFIs, ensuring timely resolution and alignment with approved design intent.
- Participate in the production of preliminary master plans, design documentation, layouts, and equipment selections within discipline of competence.
- Participate in project design reviews with vendors, contractors, and design professionals as directed by the designated BCEI Project Principal.
- Coordinate and compile information for project budget development; support schedule development with Client, vendors, contractors, and design professionals.
- Participate in project value engineering efforts with Client, vendors, contractors, and design professionals.
- Provide direction and responses to all project inquiries through appropriate project resources.
- Support BCEI Construction Manager requests for on‑site observation of construction activities within discipline of competence; attend site as required during working hours.
- Provide periodic electronic written and photographic reports of construction activities to team members.
- Participate in scheduling, coordination, and compilation of commissioning activities with Client, vendors, contractors, and design professionals; provide executive summaries to the BCEI Project Principal.
- Provide on‑site observation of commissioning activities in conjunction with the BCEI Construction Manager; issue periodic executive summaries.
- Participate, coordinate, and compile project field documentation of as‑built conditions directly or by managing appropriate design and construction resources.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Relevant certifications in plumbing, fire protection, or MEP design are a plus (e.g., NFPA, ASPE, NICET).
- 8+ years of experience in designing plumbing and fire protection systems, with at least 2–3 years in data center projects.
- Proven experience in design management, consultant coordination, statutory approvals, construction administration, and contractor query resolution for large‑scale engineering projects.
- Expertise with BIM and advanced design tools for MEP systems.
- Strong knowledge of fire suppression systems (FM‑200, Inergen, CO₂, water mist), fire alarms, sprinklers, and other life safety systems.
- Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit (BIM), and other relevant tools for system design and modeling.
- Expertise in hydraulic calculations and system sizing (pumps, fire risers, water treatment systems).
- Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to lead design reviews and drive alignment across multidisciplinary teams.
