About the role:
We are building a BESS manufacturing line in India delivering 5 MW grid-scale containerised systems and 261 kW commercial & industrial (C&I) cabinets. The BESS Design Engineer sits at the heart of this — translating customer requirements into bid-stage designs that win business, and then converting won projects into manufacturable, deliverable, code-compliant products on the production line.
This is a dual-mandate role. You will spend roughly half your time supporting the Business Development team with rapid, technically credible proposal designs (sizing, SLDs, layouts, BOM, costing inputs), and the other half producing the detailed engineering package — production drawings, cable schedules, GA layouts, thermal and protection design, and the build pack — that the factory and site teams use to manufacture, dispatch, and commission systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Presales/Proposal Design:
• Interpret customer RFPs, RFQs, and tender specifications across utility, IPP, C&I, and EPC clients; identify gaps and clarification points before quoting.
• Size battery capacity, C-rate, and augmentation strategy from the customer's use case (peak shaving, RA, frequency regulation, RE firming, behind-the-meter, microgrid, DG hybrid).
• Select and right-size the PCS / inverter, transformer, MV switchgear, and HVAC / liquid cooling for the duty cycle and ambient profile.
• Produce concept-level deliverables for bids: single-line diagrams, container or cabinet GA layouts, civil pad / footprint drawings, interconnection topology, and high-level controls architecture.
• Build the proposal BOM and feed accurate quantities, makes, and assumptions to BD and Costing for pricing; flag long-lead and PPP-MII / ALMM-sensitive items up front.
• Run round-trip efficiency, auxiliary load, degradation, and LCOS calculations to support the commercial proposition; co-own techno-economic models with BD.
• Defend the design in customer technical clarification meetings, value-engineer alternatives, and convert bid designs into firm scope on order win.
Execution/Production Design:
• Convert won proposals into full detailed engineering packages: electrical design, mechanical / structural, thermal, fire & safety, controls, and auxiliaries.
• Detailed electrical design — LV and MV SLDs, protection coordination, busbar and cable sizing, earthing and lightning protection, harmonic and short-circuit studies (with simulation team).
• Mechanical and layout design — module / rack / container or cabinet GA, structural support, ingress protection, seismic and transport loading, serviceability and clearances.
• Thermal management — HVAC or liquid-cooling sizing, airflow / coolant routing, condensation and humidity control, validated against worst-case Indian ambient conditions.
• Fire & safety — gas / aerosol / water-mist suppression selection, deflagration venting, smoke and gas detection, NFPA 855 and UL 9540A reviews.
• BMS, EMS, and SCADA integration architecture — comms topology (CAN, Modbus, IEC 61850, DNP3), cyber-security baseline, and alignment with the mandatory Indian EMS software requirement.
• Release manufacturing-ready drawings, BOMs, wiring harnesses, label sets, and assembly instructions to Production; own ECN / ECR management through the lifecycle.
• Apply Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFM / DFA) — drive cost, quality, takt time, and serviceability into the design with Production and Quality.
• Support FAT, SAT, type tests, and on-site commissioning; close design feedback loops from field issues into the next revision.
Compliance,Standards & Documentation:
• Ensure designs comply with applicable Indian regulations and standards: CEA technical standards, CEIG / electrical inspectorate requirements, IS / IEC adoption, BIS, factory safety, and grid code where applicable.
• Apply international standards: IEC 62933 (BESS performance, safety, environment), IEC 62619 / 62620 (cells & batteries), UL 9540 / 9540A, NFPA 855, IEEE 1547 / 2030, IEC 61000 series (EMC).
• Track and design to PPP-MII (Make-in-India) origin requirements, ALMM (where solar-coupled), PLI-ACC localisation expectations, and customer-specific local-content clauses.
• Maintain a controlled drawing register, DFMEA / PFMEA, design review records, and a clean handover trail from Engineering → Production → Site.
Required Education:
• B.E. / B.Tech in Electrical, Electrical & Electronics, Power Systems, or Mechatronics. M.Tech / MS preferred for power-electronics or energy-storage specialisation.
Required Experience:
• 5–10 years total, with at least 3 years specifically on BESS — grid-scale containerised systems and / or C&I cabinet products end-to-end.
• Demonstrable history of taking at least 2 BESS projects from proposal stage through detailed design, manufacturing, and commissioning.
• Hands-on exposure to LFP chemistry, liquid-cooled architectures, and modern high-voltage string PCS topologies.
