Job Summary
The Deputy Project Manager will support the Project Manager in planning, execution, monitoring, and successful completion of Railway Tunnel Projects executed through the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The role involves coordination with construction, design, safety, planning, QA/QC, MEP, and client teams to ensure timely completion of tunnel works while maintaining quality, safety, and contractual compliance.
ResponsibilitiesProject Execution & Coordination
- Assist the Project Manager in overall execution of railway tunnel construction activities using NATM methodology.
- Supervise day-to-day tunneling activities including excavation, primary support, rock bolting, shotcreting, lattice girder erection, waterproofing, and lining works.
- Coordinate with construction teams, consultants, subcontractors, and client representatives for smooth project execution.
- Monitor tunnel advance progress and ensure achievement of project milestones as per approved schedule.
Planning & Monitoring
- Support preparation and implementation of construction schedules, recovery plans, and resource deployment strategies.
- Review daily, weekly, and monthly progress reports.
- Track productivity, equipment utilization, and material consumption for optimized project performance.
- Coordinate with planning engineers for progress monitoring and delay mitigation.
Technical Management
- Ensure NATM excavation and support systems are executed as per approved drawings, geotechnical recommendations, and method statements.
- Review geological mapping reports and coordinate necessary changes in support systems based on ground conditions.
- Assist in resolving technical issues related to tunneling operations and construction interfaces.
Safety & Quality
- Ensure compliance with project safety standards, tunnel safety procedures, and statutory regulations.
- Promote safe working practices in underground construction activities.
- Coordinate with HSE and QA/QC teams to maintain required quality standards.
- Ensure implementation of inspection and test plans (ITP), method statements, and quality procedures.
Contract & Client Coordination
- Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and project review meetings.
- Assist in preparation of project documentation, claims support, progress presentations, and MIS reports.
- Coordinate with design consultants and client representatives for approvals and technical clarifications.
Resource & Team Management
- Supervise engineers, supervisors, and subcontractor teams at site.
- Ensure proper manpower planning, equipment availability, and material management.
- Guide junior engineers and monitor workforce productivity.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
- Master’s Degree / specialization in Tunnel Engineering will be preferred.
Experience
- 10–15 years of experience in underground/railway/metro tunnel projects.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in NATM tunnel construction projects.
- Experience in railway, metro, or highway tunnel projects is preferred.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of NATM tunneling methodology.
- Understanding of tunnel geology and geotechnical behavior.
- Experience in tunnel support systems and underground construction equipment.
- Knowledge of construction planning and project monitoring tools.
- Strong leadership, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Familiarity with safety standards related to underground construction.
