About the role

Description

  

The primary responsibility of the Assistant Controller – Solid Waste & Recycling is to manage and oversee all accounting operations, including the monthly close cycle, financial reporting, internal controls, policy, and process development. Responsibilities also include oversight of process and financial information for all divisional locations and joint venture operations.  Information prepared will assist management in making informed financial decisions. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee and support the accounting department to ensure preparation of accurate and timely financial management reports including, but not limited to; monthly financial statement, analysis of financial information, and annual audits for all entities in the division. 
  • Oversee the accuracy of accounts payable & receivable
  • Oversee the accuracy of the fixed asset records for all divisional entities.
  • Review and perform monthly closing of financial statements for all divisional entities with attention to detail pertaining to accuracy.
  • Oversee reconciliation of scale and dispatch software to general ledger. 
  • Prepare monthly bank and investment account reconciliations.
  • Oversee preparation of solid waste tax filings and payments, rebills and intercompany reconciliations. 
  • Work closely with external accountants for the year-end financial reporting requirements.
  • Establish, implement and monitor appropriate internal controls and policies that reflect the integrity of all operations, processes and data that will enhance the company’s growth.
  • Develop tools and procedures to streamline daily operations of existing and new entities.
  • Report to Corporate Controller as assigned with accurate and timely reports and analysis to facilitate financial information needs.
  • Participate in a wide variety of special projects and prepare required reports.
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Conform with, and abide by, all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
  • Travel required to other DCC Offices including but not limited to Blaine, Hugo, and Keewatin.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; or
  • 4+ years of hands-on accounting experience

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

This position is responsible for managing the accounting function for all solid waste & recycling entities.


WORK ENVIORMENT:
This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. 


PHYSCIAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
