Introduction
The Mainframe Automation Consultant plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and supporting automation solutions across z/OS environments. This role requires deep expertise in mainframe operations, system automation, and monitoring tools, combined with strong analytical and communication skills. The consultant will work closely with operations, engineering, and project teams to enable efficient and reliable automated system behaviors, ensuring high availability and optimized performance of IBM Z platforms.
Your Role And Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and support automation solutions for z/OS environments using IBM System Automation and NetView.
- Lead and participate in z/OS automation migration projects, ensuring smooth transition and minimal downtime.
- Analyze operational processes and develop REXX scripts and JCL to enhance automation and reduce manual intervention.
- Administer and maintain the System Automation Policy Database (PDB), including updates and customization.
- Provide consulting and advisory support on mainframe automation strategies and best practices.
- Troubleshoot automation-related issues using TSO/ISPF, logs, and automation traces.
- Support system startup, shutdown, recovery, and event-driven automation activities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate automation solutions with enterprise monitoring frameworks.
- Produce technical documentation, runbooks, and communication materials for stakeholders.
- Evaluate new automation tools and competitive technologies to recommend improvements.

Required Technical And Professional Expertise
- 8+ years of strong experience managing IBM System Automation (IBM SA) and NetView for z/OS, including monitoring, policy setup, customization, and maintenance
- 6+ years of experience in a mainframe operations environment, including operational, service, consultancy, or support roles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficient in TSO and ISPF environments
- Solid JCL (Job Control Language) skills
- 6+ years of experience writing and maintaining REXX scripts
- Strong experience with NetView PIPE programming
- Strong proficiency in CLIST programming
- Working knowledge of the System Automation Policy Database (PDB)
- Hands-on experience with z/OS automation migration projects
- Extensive hands-on experience with IBM mainframe products, including NetView for z/OS and System Automation for z/OS
- Solid understanding of IPL startup and shutdown sequencing
- Strong knowledge of enhanced automation solutions, including IWS–SA integration
- Good working knowledge of Integrated SMU with OMEGAMON and SA/NetView SDF
- Expertise in automation customization, including defining service periods, events, triggers, and pacing gates
- Basic knowledge of GDPS/PPRC (MTMM)
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with other mainframe engineers
- Structured and organized approach with the ability to document decisions, solutions, and procedures
- Acts as a subject matter expert in the mainframe automation domain
- Demonstrates high personal initiative to improve, optimize, refine automation solutions, and remove duplicate implementations
Preferred Technical And Professional Experience
- Knowledge of other IBM Z software related to system operation, configuration, and automation.
- Understanding of z/OS system startup, shutdown, IPL processes, and recovery procedures.
- Experience with SMP/E installation, upgrade, and maintenance processes.
- Familiarity with competing automation and operations tools.
- Exposure to fully automated system configurations on IBM Z platforms.
