Job Description – UDB DB2 Database Admin – L3

Role & Responsibilities
• Lead installation, configuration and standardization of Db2 LUW platforms (single/clustered) across environments.
• Own advanced backup/recovery design (online/offline, incremental, log management) and regular DR validation exercises.
• Design, implement and administer high availability and disaster recovery (HADR, TSA/cluster integration, automated failover runbooks).
• Perform advanced performance tuning (SQL, memory, IO, locking, log throughput) using db2pd, explain, event monitors and OS metrics.
• Plan and execute complex upgrades/migrations (cross-version, cross-platform where applicable) with minimal downtime.
• Drive capacity planning, growth trends, and storage optimization (tablespaces, compression, reclaimable space, reorg strategy).
• Automate DBA operations using shell scripting and Db2 administrative APIs; improve MTTR through tooling and monitoring.
• Handle complex incidents/problem management, perform RCA, create permanent fixes and prevent recurrence.
• Review and enforce security standards (encryption/TDE where applicable, auditing, least privilege, separation of duties).
• Provide technical mentorship to L1/L2 DBAs; review changes and validate implementation plans.
• Partner with application, infrastructure and vendor teams for performance and stability improvements.
• Support 24x7 production environments including major incident bridges and planned maintenance windows.
Skills
Must have Nice to Have
Technical Skills (Core & Top-Up) Strong hands-on administration of Db2 10.5/11.x on Linux/UNIX/Windows (LUW).
Proven expertise in HADR design/operations and DR drills; ability to troubleshoot replication and failover issues.
Advanced performance tuning skills (SQL tuning, indexing strategy, parameter tuning, concurrency/locking).
Expertise in backup/restore, rollforward, log management and recovery from corruption scenarios.
Experience with upgrades and migrations with near-zero/low downtime planning.
Strong scripting/automation (shell, Python/Perl basics) and scheduling (cron/enterprise schedulers).
Good understanding of OS, storage, and network fundamentals impacting database performance.
Experience with partitioned databases (DPF) and/or pureScale (if used) including workload management. IBM Certified Advanced Database Administrator / Professional certification.
Exposure to cloud-hosted Db2 or IaaS migrations and encryption/key management.
Experience integrating monitoring with enterprise tools (Grafana/Prometheus, OEM, Splunk, etc.).
Process & Tools
Must have Nice to Have
Strong ITIL practices across Incident/Problem/Change; experience leading PIR/RCA.
Experience with CI/CD or automation pipelines for DB changes (Liquibase/Flyway) is a plus. ITIL Foundation/Intermediate certification preferred.
Behavioral Skill
Must have Nice to Have
Strong ownership and stakeholder management; clear communication during outages.
Ability to mentor and conduct technical reviews.
Analytical thinking and structured troubleshooting approach. Experience working with global teams and managing escalations.
