Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable & Payroll

The Davis H. Elliot Company, Inc. is seeking a Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable & Payroll to support and lead core accounting operations with a focus on general ledger, accounts payable, and payroll accounting. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of payroll and accounts payable transactions and related financial reporting in compliance with GAAP. The ideal candidate is a detail‑oriented accounting professional with strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to partner effectively with Payroll, HR, and Operations.
Overview:
The Senior Accountant, Accounts Payable & Payroll plays a critical role in the company’s monthly and quarterly close cycles, with primary responsibility for payroll and accounts payable ‑related accounting activities. This position performs advanced reconciliations, journal entries, and financial analysis; supports audits and compliance requirements; and provides guidance to staff‑level accountants. In addition to technical responsibilities, the role actively contributes to process improvements and internal control enhancements across accounting operations.
A Day in the Life:
- Lead and support key components of the monthly and quarterly close related to payroll, accounts payable, and operating expenses
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries and accruals for payroll, benefits, bonuses, commissions, and accounts payable
- Reconcile payroll registers to the general ledger, including wages, taxes, deductions, and benefits
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations for payroll liabilities, accounts payable, and accrued expenses
- Analyze variances and investigate discrepancies or unusual transactions
- Oversee accounts payable accounting to ensure accurate expense classification, cutoff, and accruals
- Partner with Payroll, HR, and internal departments to resolve payroll and vendor discrepancies
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and audit responses
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls
- Review work prepared by staff‑level accountants and provide guidance as needed
- Support other accounting and finance initiatives as assigned
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 5 or more years of progressive accounting experience
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting, accounts payable, and payroll accounting
- Solid understanding of GAAP
- Experience with month‑end close, reconciliations, and audits
- Proficiency with accounting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines independently
- High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information
