What You’ll Be Doing (position summary):
The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and supporting scalable data pipelines, data products, and integration solutions that enable reliable analytics, reporting, risk management, and business decision-making. The role requires strong hands-on experience with Databricks as a must-have capability, including development of ETL/ELT pipelines, data processing using Spark/PySpark, and implementation of modern data lakehouse patterns. The incumbent translates business and data requirements into secure, maintainable, and high-performing data engineering solutions, while partnering closely with technology teams, data owners, governance teams, and business stakeholders. Considerable judgement and autonomy are exercised in day-to-day tasks, including data source analysis, pipeline design, data quality validation, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and production support.

How You’ll Succeed (responsibilities):
Data Engineering and Databricks Development:
- Design, develop, test, and support scalable data pipelines using Databricks, Spark/PySpark, SQL, and related cloud data services.
- Build and maintain ETL/ELT workflows that ingest, transform, validate, and publish data for analytics, reporting, and downstream applications.
Data Platform Implementation:
- Participate in technical design, development, integration, and implementation of modern data solutions across cloud, data lake, warehouse, and enterprise data platforms.
Data Quality, Reliability, and Technical Skills:
- Work closely with business, technology, and data partners to understand data requirements, source system impacts, and downstream consumption needs.
- Implement data quality checks, monitoring, validation controls, and troubleshooting practices to ensure data accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and reliability.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory, privacy, information security, and data governance standards in the design and operation of data pipelines.
- Provide technical guidance on data engineering design decisions, performance optimization, production support, and operational resiliency.
Relationship Management:
- Build strong relationships and partnerships with technical team members, clients, vendors, and peers.
- Lead discussions, listen, and ask questions to ensure problems/issues are identified and resolved.
- Communicate detailed information in an impactful way, verbally and in writing.
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- Collaborates with peers inside and outside the work unit to identify, discuss, and resolve business and technical issues related to data engineering and platform delivery.
- Interacts regularly with business partners, data owners, technology teams, governance teams, and vendors to clarify requirements, exchange information, and resolve data-related issues.
- Works closely with internal clients to ensure data pipelines, data products, and supporting processes operate effectively, efficiently, and securely.

AUTHORITIES/DECISION RIGHTS:
As a key contributor to the business unit, this job has the authority to recommend changes to data pipelines, data processing patterns, and supporting business processes in order to enhance operational efficiency, data reliability, and effectiveness.
Experience: 5+ years of data engineering experience, including hands-on Databricks experience as a must-have requirement
Who You Are (skills/qualifications):
Must Have Skills:
- 5+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, Data Integration Developer, or similar role.
- Must have hands-on experience with Databricks, including building and supporting production-grade data pipelines.
- Strong experience with Spark/PySpark, SQL, ETL/ELT development, data ingestion, transformation, and pipeline orchestration.
- Experience with Azure data services, including Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, and cloud-based data integration patterns.
- Good understanding of data lakehouse concepts, data modelling, data quality controls, metadata management, and secure data handling.
- Experience with production support, monitoring, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and operational resiliency for data pipelines.
- Ability to manage relationships with technology, data governance, and business partners.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain data engineering concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Good to Have:
- Experience with Delta Lake, medallion architecture, streaming data, API-based ingestion, Kafka, Autosys, GitHub, CI/CD, or DevOps practices.
- Exposure to legacy data platforms such as Netezza, Oracle, PL/SQL, or Informatica is an asset.
