Job details:
APRE Art House is a contemporary art gallery based in Colaba, Mumbai, dedicated to advancing rigorous artistic practices and meaningful conversations. Founded by Prerna S.M. Jain, an alumna of Christie’s Education, New York, the gallery was formalised in 2022 committed to both emerging and established voices whose work engages with pressing socio-political and gender-oriented concerns. The Gallery has since expanded into a new space at Arshiwala Mansion, a heritage building in Colaba.
APRE’s reach extends beyond Mumbai, with curated projects in New York and New Delhi, and participation in significant art fairs including the India Art Fair. Its public programming (comprising panel discussions, performances, and film screenings) reflects a belief in interdisciplinary engagement as an essential mode of cultural production.
With a programme grounded in research, clarity, and cultural responsiveness, APRE positions itself as a site of critical inquiry within the South Asian contemporary art landscape. The gallery is recognised for its museum-calibre exhibitions, an ethos of transparency, and a sustained commitment to fostering long-term relationships with artists, collectors, and institutions.
Role
We are looking for a Curator or a Curatorial Associate with at least 3 years of experience to join our team. This is a hands-on role spanning the full exhibition lifecycle — from research and concept development through to production, installation, and public programming. You will also contribute to the gallery's long-term programme strategy and play a key role in building and maintaining institutional and artist relationships.
– Research and develop exhibition concepts in close collaboration with the gallery director and represented artists
– Write exhibition texts, wall labels, catalogue essays, artist bios, and curatorial proposals
– Coordinate all aspects of exhibition production — timelines, budgets, fabricators, shippers, and installers
– Manage condition reporting, artwork handling documentation, loans, and insurance coordination
– Conduct studio visits and maintain active, ongoing relationships with artists
– Contribute to the gallery's annual programme strategy, identifying artists and themes aligned with our direction
– Connect exhibition programming with public events — talks, screenings, workshops, and learning initiatives
– Liaise between artists, the sales team, the events team, and collectors
– Maintain relationships with museums, institutions, curators, and other galleries for loans and collaborative projects
– Represent the gallery at art fairs, biennales, and institutional events
– Support recommendations and contribute to strategy where relevant
Eligibility
– Minimum 3 years of professional experience in a curatorial role.
– Demonstrated experience developing and delivering exhibitions end-to-end
– Strong written voice — confident producing texts for public and institutional contexts
– An active and evolving engagement with contemporary art practice, criticism, and theory
– Experience coordinating complex logistics including international shipping, loans, and installation
– An existing network within the contemporary art world — artists, curators, institutions, and press
– Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with strong organisational skills
– Experience with collection management software (Artlogic or similar) is preferred
– Full professional proficiency in English; additional languages are an advantage
