General Description:

The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas (CALV) is the country’s leading nonprofit culinary and hospitality training institute. CALV’s mission is to train people for successful hospitality careers in Las Vegas. CALV’s vision is to reduce poverty and eliminate unemployment by providing employability and vocational skills to youth, adults, and displaced workers.

The Instructional Assistant will be responsible for assisting instructors in delivering CALV’s hospitality-based vocational training programs. The position involves assisting instructors with the teaching of both theoretical and practical components of food and beverage, providing instructional coverage when needed, teaching Continuing Education (CE) courses when requested, assisting in the on-site operation of the Westside Bistro restaurant & 710 Coffee Bar, and performing other administrative duties as required.

The ideal candidate will have strong food & beverage expertise, a passion for teaching, and a commitment to student success and workforce preparedness. 

Essential Functions:

  • Support the academic team in delivering high-quality instruction that prepares students for careers in the hospitality industry 
  • Provide hands-on Food & Beverage instruction using varied methods aligned with established curriculum 
  • Provide instructional coverage, when required
  • Assist in operating the Westside Bistro and 710 Coffee Bar, delivering excellent guest service
  • Support instructors and staff at onsite and offsite events; occasional evenings and weekends required 
  • Teach Food & Beverage-themed Continuing Education (CE) courses, when requested; occasional evenings required 
  • Perform administrative tasks, including attendance tracking, evaluations, and grade records 
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor, consistent with the role

Minimum Qualifications:

A high school diploma and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a coffee shop and/or restaurant operation are required. Experience working with diverse learners is preferred. Basic computer skills and a knowledge of technologies used in the hospitality workplace (e.g., point-of-sale systems, handhelds) is required.

Experience and Education Substitutions:

  • An equivalent combination of formal education and appropriate related experience may be considered.

Licensing and Certification:

  • Current SNHD Food Handler Safety Training Card (required)
  • ServSafe Food Manager Certification (preferred)


Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be obtained from an accredited educational institution.
