Crown Estate Scotland has an exciting opportunity for an IT Systems Administrator to join our Information Services team on a full-time permanent basis.


This role sits within the IT/Cyber specialism of the Information Services Team and work alongside outsourced IT service providers. It will undertake varied IT/Cyber tasks listen below to ensure to smooth and safe operation of Crown Estate Scotland.

About the role

The successful candidate/s for this new role within the organisation will be responsible for:


  • Deploy and manage end user devices (laptops, mobiles & peripherals)
  • Maintaining user accounts, access permissions and group policies
  • Maintaining Office 365 and other cloud-based systems
  • Maintaining IT infrastructure including servers, switches and firewalls
  • Perform investigations triggered by the SIEM and taking any actions required
  • Address vulnerabilities detected by our management system
  • Implement system changes to deploy new/update systems and security controls
  • Maintaining Access Control Lists on next generation firewalls.
  • Monitor various security frameworks (such as below) & suggest and implement improvements
  • Scottish Government Cyber Resilience Framework
  • CIS Controls and benchmarks
  • Microsoft Security Score
  • Cyber Essentials Plus
  • Perform Risk assessments for identified cyber risks and for any exceptions to controls
  • Perform internal IT/cyber tests and assist with externally run tests
  • Provide guidance and support to staff on IT and Cyber issues
  • Maintain IT documentation and registers of systems
  • Support and develop workflows using the Microsoft Power Automate
  • Procurement and management of IT contracts
  • Participate in any IT/cyber emergency management teams
  • Providing a smooth on boarding of new staff ensuring everything is working fully working on their first day.
  • Assist in maintaining the smooth operation of Crown Estate Scotland by maintaining good availability of all IT systems and services so all staff can work effectively every day.
  • Assist in maintaining the secure operation of Crown Estate Scotland by monitoring various cyber security systems and taking actions on what is identified.
  • Assist in ensuring Crown Estate Scotland prepared for a Cyber incident or data breach.
  • Holding IT Suppliers to account for delivery of their contracts


Key responsibilities

The above list of responsibilities is not exhaustive, and the post holder may be required to undertake other responsibilities and training as requested by their line manager, appropriate to the grade. Further, the holder of the post will be expected to work flexibly across all the dimensions of the corporate plan.


The contractual working location of this role is our Edinburgh office. We believe work is something you do, not a place you go to, and we are committed to supporting employees to work flexibly and in a way that suits their role and preferences.


The salary will be £49,934 with potential for future progression and annual cost of living rises. The maximum salary for this role is currently £54,489. The role also benefits from 25 days’ annual leave, plus 11.5 of public/ privilege days. Crown Estate Scotland encourage flexible working and operate a discretionary flexi-time scheme. This role offers participation in the Civil Service pension scheme.

About You


You should:

  • Degree in IT or Cyber related subject or 3-years relevant experience.
  • 2-years’ experience in a relevant IT or cyber related role (3-years without a degree) such as:
  • IT User Support
  • Windows Server Administration
  • SOC Analyst
  • Familiar with managing IT platforms including:
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Microsoft Windows Server
  • Microsoft Office 365
  • Microsoft Power BI
  • Microsoft Power Automate
  • Azure MS SQL DB instances
  • Experience in:
  • Deploying and supporting end user devices
  • Monitoring and resolving vulnerabilities
  • Applying hardening configurations
  • Analysing logs
  • Managing Firewall access control lists


You will have the following qualities, which are key to success in this role:


  • Skilled in Microsoft Active Directory with knowledge of Group Policies
  • Understanding of networking including TCP/IP, VLANS and firewalls
  • Skilled in maintaining Microsoft Windows based environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Skilled in time management and prioritising own workload
