Job Description – Creative Textile Designer
Department: Research & Development
Reports To: Head – R&D / Creative Director
1. Role Summary
The R&D Designer is responsible for developing innovative rug design concepts through continuous market research, trend analysis, and theme creation. The role converts global insights into design directions, mood boards, and structured design briefs, enabling the R&D Developer Team to create accurate and production-feasible samples.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Market Research & Trend Analysis
- Conduct ongoing research on global rug and home décor trends.
- Analyze competitor products across key markets (USA, Canada, EU, Middle East).
- Identify gaps in RMC’s current design assortment and new opportunities.
- Maintain an internal trend library of styles, categories, colors, and textures.
B. Concept Development & Mood Board Creation
- Develop seasonal and category-wise design concepts.
- Create mood boards capturing theme, color palette, textures, inspirations, and visual direction.
- Ensure concepts align with market relevance, buyer preferences, and production feasibility.
- Present design directions in structured internal reviews.
C. Design Briefing for Sample Development
- Prepare detailed design briefs for the R&D Developer Team including:
- Theme and concept
- Construction type and technique
- Material and yarn direction
- Color palette with references
- Technical instructions (pile heights, textures, relief effects)
- Provide reference images, inspirations, sketch ideas, or CAD support (if needed).
- Ensure the brief is production-feasible and follows RMC’s sampling workflow.
D. Coordination with Internal Teams
- Work closely with Merchandising to understand target categories, buyer requirements, and pricing expectations.
- Collaborate with Production to confirm material availability, construction viability, and timelines.
- Involve QA early to ensure designs align with quality and finishing capabilities.
E. Sampling Follow-Up & Review
- Review the first output/sample from Developers and provide structured feedback.
- Suggest improvements in texture, color, pattern detailing, or construction.
- Ensure final samples match creative vision, market need, and design brief accuracy.
- Document all changes and maintain version-control of designs and sample evolutions.
F. Design Documentation & Library Management
- Maintain an organized database of mood boards, concepts, briefs, and design references.
- Ensure all design files, specs, and sample images are properly archived for future development.
- Update internal design repositories with new themes, patterns, and concepts.
3. Required Skills & Knowledge
A. Creative Expertise
- Strong aesthetic sense of rug design categories: modern, transitional, traditional, vintage, abstract, kids, outdoor, textured.
- Proficiency in color theory, pattern development, and visual storytelling.
B. Technical Understanding
- Good understanding of production techniques: hand-tufted, hand-knotted, loom-woven, flatweave, braided, textured constructions.
- Knowledge of yarn types, dyeing, finishing, and texture creation in rug making.
- Ability to judge feasibility, cost implications, and construction limitations.
C. Software & Tools
- Familiarity with Adobe Suite (Photoshop/Illustrator) or equivalent design tools.
- Comfortable preparing mood boards, presentations, and reference decks.
D. Interpersonal & Collaboration Skills
- Clear communicator capable of explaining design intent to Developers.
- Collaborative mindset for cross-department coordination.
- Strong follow-up and documentation discipline.
