Park Ranger I is part of a career series for Park Ranger Aide, I, II and III. Classes in this series perform a wide variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled duties in the administration, operation and maintenance of county parks, beaches, open space areas, lakes and recreational areas, landscaped areas, buildings and other assigned facilities; and do other related work as required.
Typical Tasks and Representative Duties

(Not in order of importance)

  • Patrols assigned areas to provide assistance to the public in matters relating to their health, safety and welfare.
  • Checks visitors coming into the park; assigns appropriate use areas; collects fees as required; maintains records of park activities and prepares related reports.
  • Enforces park rules and regulations to protect the public and the environment; protects and manages natural resources.
  • Performs a wide variety of maintenance tasks such as repairing benches, tables, plumbing, sprinkler and water systems, playground equipment; maintains lawns and landscaped areas.
  • Responds to emergency situations and provides first aid when required. Cleans and maintains swimming pools, park areas, buildings and related equipment; performs other light custodial maintenance as required.
  • Explains and interprets park features; develops, plans and implements recreation programs.
  • Organizes and coordinates operations and activities of assigned program area; may direct the work of subordinate and seasonal employees as required.
  • Performs administrative tasks as directed; operates standard office equipment and computer applications.
  • Communicates with a wide variety of staff and members of the public in the course of work; may be required to resolve conflicts between park guests.
  • Operates County vehicles and light equipment in the performance of assigned duties.
  • As assigned, supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff; interviews and selects employees and recommends appointments, transfers, reassignments, terminations and disciplinary actions; establishes work schedules, assigns employee duties and reviews work to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance with established, standards, requirements and procedures.

This recruitment may be used to fill future permanent, substitute, limited-term, and temporary positions, both full-time and part-time within the department.

Position Duties

Education and Experience

A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:

Park Ranger I: Either A: One year of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger Aide. OR B: An Associate degree, or 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Park or Natural Resources Management, Environmental Studies, Horticulture, Forestry or closely related field. OR C: Graduation from High School or GED AND two years of job-related experience.
