Job Title: Copyediting Supervisor – Publishing
Role Overview
The Copyediting Supervisor oversees the copyediting function, ensuring manuscripts meet the highest standards of language, consistency, and editorial integrity. This role manages a team of copyeditors, enforces house style, and collaborates closely with internal stakeholders to deliver quality work on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
1. Team Leadership & Editorial Oversight
Lead, mentor, and manage a team of in-house and freelance copyeditors
Allocate manuscripts based on complexity, subject matter, and deadlines
Review edited manuscripts for quality, consistency, and adherence to house style
Provide ongoing training on editorial standards and publishing conventions
2. Manuscript Copyediting & Quality Control
Ensure accuracy in grammar, syntax, punctuation, and usage
Enforce adherence to established style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, publisher-specific
guidelines)
Handle complex or high-profile titles personally when needed
3. Workflow & Production Coordination
Track manuscripts through the editorial lifecycle
Coordinate with typesetting and design teams to resolve editorial queries
4. Author & Stakeholder CommunicationCommunicate editorial changes and queries clearly to authors
Address author concerns while maintaining editorial standards
Support smooth author review and revision cycles
Partner with project managers to manage expectations and timelines
5. Process Improvement & Standards Management
Maintain and update the publisher’s house style guide
Develop SOPs for copyediting, proofreading, and quality assurance
Implement tools and best practices to improve efficiency and accuracy
Monitor editorial quality metrics and continuously improve processes
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in English, Publishing, Journalism, or related field
5–10 years of experience in book or journal publishing, with strong copyediting expertise
2–4 years of experience managing editorial teams or freelancers
Deep familiarity with major style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style)
Proven experience working on long-form content (books, academic titles, or journals)
Preferred Skills
Strong understanding of academic, trade, or educational publishing workflows
Experience with manuscript tracking systems and publishing tools (e.g., InDesign, XML workflows,
CMS platforms)
Excellent attention to detail and consistency
Ability to manage multiple titles and tight production schedules
Strong interpersonal skills for working with authors and cross-functional teams
Deadline-driven with multiple concurrent titles in different stages of production
