PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and hands-on experiences in the Health Science program to help them develop the academic knowledge, technical skills, and professional behaviors necessary for postsecondary education and careers in the healthcare industry. Instructional focus areas may include Medical Terminology, Principles of Health Science, Anatomy and Physiology, and coordination of Health Science internships and practicum experiences.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Health Science Grades 6-12 Certification; or
Bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, or high school diploma/GED and equivalent wage-earning experience as required by certification
Valid Texas career and technical education certificate with required license, endorsements, and training for subject and level assigned, or related training and work experience for certification waivers under the District of Innovation Plan (DOI)
Demonstrated competency in Health Science instructional areas
Professional experience in one or more healthcare-related fields preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and health science careers
Knowledge of Health Science curriculum and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)
Ability to provide hands-on instruction in a lab-based environment
Ability to supervise and manage students in clinical or simulated clinical settings
Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Willingness to actively participate in and support the Health Science Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO)
Experience:
Student teaching, approved internship, or 3 years of wage-earning experience in the area of certification
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Instructional Strategies
Develop and implement lesson plans aligned to district curriculum and Health Science TEKS.
Provide written evidence of preparation as required
Use instructional strategies, materials, equipment, and technology aligned to industry standards
Deliver instruction emphasizing safety, infection control, professionalism, and ethical practices
Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learner needs
Collaborate with special education staff to implement IEP accommodations
Supervise student lab activities and clinical simulations
Facilitate hands-on learning experiences, simulations, and lab-based instruction related to healthcare careers.
Student Growth and Development
Conduct ongoing assessments using formal and informal measures
Promote student progress toward completion of a Health Science Program of Study.
Prepare students for postsecondary education, workforce readiness, dual credit opportunities, and industry-based certifications.
Assist students in developing employability skills, leadership skills, and professionalism required in healthcare settings.
Serve as a positive professional role model
Internship and Practicum Coordination
Assist with the coordination and supervision of Health Science internships, clinical experiences, and practicum placements.
Develop and maintain partnerships with healthcare providers, clinics, hospitals, athletic training programs, and community organizations.
Monitor student progress and professionalism in internship and practicum settings.
Ensure compliance with district, state, and industry safety expectations during off-campus experiences.
Classroom Management and Organization
Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Communication
Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Professional Growth and Development
Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
Comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
CTE teachers are expected to actively participate in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) when aligned with their Program of Study and serve as the CTSO advisor or co-advisor.
Work collaboratively with campus and district leaders to promote program growth and long-term sustainability.

Comply with federal, state, and local regulations related to the occupational area assigned.
Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Performance will be evaluated based on multiple metrics including student growth, program growth and sustainability, IBC success rates, and the percentage of students completing a CTE Program of Study.
