Role Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled VMware Infrastructure & DevOps Enablement Engineer to design, deploy, and configure a bare-metal server environment at an employee location. Our goal is to build a secure, scalable infrastructure that lets remote teams do development and DevOps work smoothly.
This role requires deep expertise in VMware vSphere, vCenter, virtualization, networking, and infrastructure automation. The engineer will be responsible for setting up virtualized environments, ensuring remote accessibility, and optimizing system performance for distributed teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Bare Metal Server Setup & Configuration
Install and configure bare metal servers at designated employee locations.
Perform hardware validation, firmware updates, RAID configuration, and BIOS tuning.
Install and configure VMware ESXi hypervisor on physical servers.
Ensure optimal hardware utilization and performance tuning.
2. VMware Virtualization (vSphere & vCenter)
Deploy and configure VMware vCenter Server.
Create and manage vSphere clusters, datastores, and resource pools.
Provision and manage virtual machines (VMs) for development and DevOps use cases.
Configure HA (High Availability), DRS (Distributed Resource Scheduler), where applicable.
Implement VM templates, snapshots, and cloning strategies.
3. Virtual Machine & Environment Setup
Design and deploy VM environments for:
Development teams
DevOps pipelines
Testing environments
Configure OS-level settings (Linux/Windows as required).
Optimize VM performance and resource allocation.
4. Networking & Remote Accessibility
Design and implement network architecture for virtual environments.
Configure:
vSwitches / Distributed Switches (vDS)
VLANs and subnetting
NAT/routing as required
Enable secure remote access for distributed teams:
VPN setup (if required)
Firewall configuration
Access control policies
Ensure low-latency and secure connectivity for remote developers.
5. Storage & Backup Configuration
Configure local or network-based storage (NAS/SAN if applicable).
Set up datastores and storage policies.
Implement backup and recovery strategies for VMs.
Ensure data redundancy and failover readiness.
6. DevOps Enablement
Prepare infrastructure to support:
CI/CD pipelines
Containerization (Docker/Kubernetes, optional but preferred)
Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
Collaborate with DevOps teams to ensure environments meet workflow requirements.
Enable scalable and reproducible environments.
7. Security & Compliance
Implement security best practices across infrastructure:
Role-based access control (RBAC)
Network segmentation
Patch management
Harden ESXi hosts and VMs.
Ensure compliance with organizational security standards.
8. Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
Create detailed documentation for:
Infrastructure architecture
Setup procedures
Access guidelines
Provide handover and training to internal teams.
Maintain configuration and operational documentation.
9. Troubleshooting & Support
Diagnose and resolve issues related to:
Virtualization
Networking
Storage
Provide post-deployment support during the stabilization phase.
Optimize system performance and reliability.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Technical Skills
Strong experience with:
VMware vSphere & vCenter
ESXi installation and configuration
Solid understanding of:
Virtualization concepts
Networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, firewalls)
Storage systems (SAN/NAS, datastores)
Experience with Linux and/or Windows server environments
Knowledge of remote access solutions (VPN, SSH, RDP)
Preferred Skills (Good to Have)
Experience with monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, etc.)
VMware certifications (VCP, VCAP) are a plus
Soft Skills
Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting ability
Excellent communication and documentation skills
Ability to work independently in a project-based environment
Proactive approach to identifying and resolving infrastructure gaps
