Summary
The Controller is responsible for the execution of day-to-day accounting operations of Contexture and for a wide range of finance and accounting functions that ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and support the strategic direction of the organization. This role includes active involvement with internal departments and external stakeholders.
This position is based in Phoenix Arizona; Denver Colorado; or Grand Junction, Colorado and requires local residency in one of these base locations. Our strategic flexibility allows for local work from home opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Policies and Procedures
- Assist with the maintenance and adherence to finance department policies and procedures including:
- Procedures for all internal tasks (how to process accounts receivables, how to process accounts payable, etc.)
- Month-end close processes
- Internal control and accounting policies
Financial Reporting and Project Tracking
- Oversee departmental program and project tracking to ensure timely and accurate government agency and grant reporting.
- Review budget versus actual revenue and expense to ensure accurate monthly financial reporting.
- Anticipate and respond to interdepartmental requests for financial information and reports.
Staff Relations
- Manage finance team staff to ensure timely completion of finance and accounting activities.
- Hire and support staff, ensuring proper training, delegation of duties and back-up of key accounting functions.
- Leads and directs the work of other employees and has responsibility for personnel actions including hiring, performance management, and termination.
Finance and Accounting Functions
- Execute and oversee timely completion of the month-end close process.
- Support the preparation of all annual audit workpapers and 990 tax schedules.
- Stay up to date on nonprofit GAAP compliance.
- Monitor local, state, and federal tax filings to ensure compliance.
- Maintain an orderly system for the storage of accounting documents.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Skills
- Strong understanding of business management, financial, and leadership principles including GAAP, internal controls, tax regulations (non-profit accounting a plus).
- Experience with enterprise level accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics Business Central a plus).
- Advanced computer skills, specifically in Excel.
- Strong understanding of all accounting functions and experience with financial data analytics and reporting.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, leadership, coaching, and conflict resolution skills.
- Effective time and project management skills, ability to analyze processes and information, identify problems and trends, and develop effective solutions and strategies.
- Ability to provide exceptional service to staff members, internal and external stakeholders.
- Commitment to Contexture’s mission and strategic direction.
Education/Experience
- Minimum of 8+ years of work experience in finance or accounting with 5-7 years of management experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree required in Business, Finance and/or Accounting.
- CPA and/or Master’s Degree preferred.

The position may require occasional availability for after-hours work, outside of regularly scheduled hours.
The position may require the ability to periodically drive to and from clients, conferences and/or events; and/or limited travel.
This position is expected to be exposed to, process, or handle sensitive information including but not limited to Protected Health Information (PHI), Personally Identifiable Information (PII), financial information, etc. As such, the holder of this position is expected to comply with all applicable laws, regulations, organizational policies, and compliance expectations.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those necessary to perform the essential functions of the role:
- Frequent communication and information exchange.
- Regular movement within the office to access equipment and materials.
- Ability to remain stationary for extended periods (approximately 50% of the time).
- Continuous use of computers and office equipment (e.g., keyboard, monitor, printer).
- Frequent handling of materials up to 10 lbs; occasional handling up to 30 lbs.
