About us
Nāgrika is an independent, non-partisan organisation working to amplify the voices of citizens from India's smaller cities. Over the last decade, we have built research, narratives, and tools rooted in lived experiences across more than 600 small and mid-sized cities — creating grounded, citizen-led knowledge that informs public discourse and policy where such perspectives are often missing.
About the Role
The Communications Associate is responsible for bringing Nāgrika's work to life on social media through design, video, writing, and content sourcing. This is a hands-on, creative execution role that sits at the intersection of design, storytelling, and research translation. You will be both a maker and a communicator, someone who is comfortable behind a camera and in front of one, equally at ease designing a carousel and writing the caption that makes it land.
What You Will Do
1. Design and Visual Content
- Design all social media creatives (static posts, carousels, infographics, and thumbnails) across all our communication channels and social media platforms
2. Video and Reel Production
- Edit short-form video content including reels, explainers, and podcast clips, and assist in planning and executing social media shoots
- Be on camera as a presenter for talking reels. This is a regular, visible part of the role, not an occasional ask
3. Content Mining and Research Translation
- Regularly go through Nāgrika's existing research, reports, city profiles, and project archives to find stories worth sharing publicly, working closely with the research and program teams
- Translate complex research and field insights into accessible, engaging formats without oversimplifying the work
4. Copywriting
- Write captions and copy for all social media posts, adapting tone, length, and format per platform
- Ensure all copy is accurate, aligned with Nāgrika's voice, and reviewed before publishing
5. Strategy and Ideation
- Contribute to content calendar planning and social media strategy discussions, proposing ideas rooted in Nāgrika's ongoing work and current urban issues
- Coordinate with the team to surface timely stories and ensure content is produced when it is most relevant
6. Community and Audience Engagement
- Monitor and respond to all DMs, comments, and replies across Nāgrika's social media platforms in a timely and on-brand manner
- Handle external communications-related emails and organise them accordingly
Who Will Thrive in This Role
- You are a maker who takes pride in the quality of what you put out and You can read a research report and find the things in it worth turning into a reel
- You are comfortable on camera and can speak naturally to a topic you have just prepared for
- You work well across functions, are organised enough to manage a content calendar independently, and care about the work as much as the aesthetics of it
Who This Role Is Probably Not For
- Those who need a fully structured brief before starting any creative work or who are uncomfortable being on camera
- Those looking for a purely design-led role: writing, research reading, and coordination are equally central here
- Those who prefer to work independently without engaging with the team's substantive work
What You Bring
Required
- 1–3 years of experience in social media content creation, visual design, or communications, internships and freelance work count
- Proficiency in Canva at minimum; Adobe Creative Suite or Figma is a strong advantage
- Video editing skills and comfort being on camera in a natural, confident way
- Strong written communication in English, with the ability to read research outputs and identify what is worth communicating publicly
Good to have
- Familiarity with urban issues, governance, or social sector communications in India
- Knowledge of social media analytics and what drives meaningful engagement
- Hindi language ability
What We Offer
Real creative ownership over how Nāgrika communicates publicly, exposure to research and civic engagement work, and a collaborative, non-hierarchical team doing work that matters. A base in Dehradun with a culture that encourages curiosity and growth.
Salary: ₹3.6-4.2 LPA, based on experience.
