Lead Analyst/Energy Settlements
Colorado Springs Utilities is looking for a Lead Analyst to join our Energy Settlements group. This group is responsible for accurate and timely settlement and reporting of contracts with many counterparties. All work performed by the Settlements group is related to the trading function and requires a robust knowledge of electric operations within a Power Market, fuels to include coal, propane and diesel, and natural gas operations. In this position, you will be responsible for complex research and analysis supporting day-ahead and real-time activity, electric and gas cost adjustment analysis, regulatory reporting, and special projects as assigned.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) knowledge and ability to write required settlement reports for immediate use and future requirements.
- RTO, Natural Gas (NG) and Fuels data collection and analytic skills.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on the proper accounting treatment for RTO specific transactions.
- Working with the power settlement staff to support and teach market research validation skills for identifying market and software issues.
- Support settlements Power, Fuels and NG colleagues, as well as the Settlement's supervisor.
- Manage and maintain settlement ECA/GCA General Ledger requirements in the Infor Accounting System.
- Collecting, researching, and forming documentation, systems, projects, processes, and resources that inform strategic decisions.
- Utilize analytical skills to assess errors and variances to reconcile commodity transaction discrepancies with counterparties and energy markets, as well as manage disputes.
- Improving continuity and auditability of back office communications, procedures, and tools.
- Validate settlement statements for a given operating period. Workflow could include pre-settlements, operational and trading feedback, shadow settlements, meter data submittals, and meter data validation

What will it take to be successful? Most applicants will come with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field, as well as at least 8 years of direct experience in accounting and/or energy settlements or relevant analytical or business research-oriented field. Knowledge of the Southwest Power Pool Regional Transmission Organization (SPP RTO) is desired. In addition, skills or traits considered valuable for success in this position includes a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of accounting concepts, strong analytical skills, creative problem-solving, attention to details, and collaborative communication skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (1/3 of the time), and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, or pull objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary only if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other criteria are met.
- Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.
