Gas Distribution Operations Supervisor
Gas Operations is hiring a driven individual to oversee the gas distribution operations team. This highly skilled team of system operators are responsible for ensuring that all local, state and federal gas standards and regulations tied to performing maintenance and repair on the natural gas distribution system are followed as required. This position ensures that all required documentation for inspections, maintenance, and calibrations has been completed and is available for audit purposes.
Using your technical expertise, you will provide guidance and training on gas emergency response, troubleshooting gas distribution system pressure problems, adjusting and maintaining gas distribution system regulators to ensure specified safe operating pressures, and troubleshooting and repairing gas system odorizers to maintain required levels of odorant throughout the gas distribution system. You will carry a high level of responsibility and decision-making regarding our Gas System, providing supervision to a very energized and dynamic team of professionals dedicated to providing safe, reliable gas service to the citizens of Colorado Springs.
This job will require the ability to work both independently, and to develop and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups. Success in this role leads to a safer, more reliable gas system and stronger alignment across departments.
This position requires being on call after normal business hours to assist in emergencies. You must live in the Colorado Springs Utilities Service Territory. Must have at least one utility service in your name at Colorado Springs Utilities.
In this position, you will be responsible for:
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring short/long-term strategies, annual business plans to achieve the organizational mission, goals, and performance measures
- Operate and maintain the Colorado Springs Utilities gas distribution system according to all regulatory requirements (PHMSA)
- Managing and implementing projects and activities in the Gas Distribution Operations, including scheduling, resource planning, and projects
- Maintaining accurate records for gas compliance-related inspection
- Planning, coordinating, and supervising required distribution system inspections, maintenance, and repair activities for gas emergency valves, distribution system regulator stations, and odorizers.
- Oversee emergency first response efforts to provide timely and safe repair to damaged gas main and service lines
- Researching new technologies/process improvement. Develop and implement policies and procedures to improve reliability and customer service
- May act in a role as an Incident Commander during system emergencies to ensure proper response and appropriate level of resources are employed
- Serving on project teams and committees
- Developing and managing O&M budgets, and responding to any deviations from the approved cost/timeline projections. Authorize purchase of and payment for required equipment and services to include P-card purchase approvals
- Manage process documents. Review and approve any changes to processes
- Leads cross-functional coordination across gas operations, engineering, design, construction and maintenance, and regulatory and compliance
- Consult with Gas Engineering concerning design parameters for gas pressure settings
- Build, inspire, and develop a high-performing Gas Distribution Operations team capable of operating under routine and emergency conditions
- Plan regular team meetings for training and coaching
Who you are:
- Extensive knowledge of natural gas distribution system operations
- Five (5) or more years of leadership experience as a lead or supervisor overseeing employee response to gas pressure issues, damaged gas lines, or other gas emergency situations
- Prior experience in gas pipeline construction & maintenance, and or industrial gas operations strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions quickly in dynamic, high‑risk environments
- Strong multitasking skills with the ability to prioritize competing operational demands
- Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced operations setting
- Proven skill in building and maintaining strong interpersonal relationships across teams and departments
- Strong operational judgment to support system safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance
- A track record of fostering cross‑department alignment and developing teams that are prepared, trusted, and respected across the organization
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary work. Even though the weight lifted may be of only negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those is negligible.
