Asset Management ERDS Internship

At Colorado Springs Utilities, the Asset Management team offers a unique opportunity for college students to learn how operational technology is used to support engineering, field operations, and customers for all four services. The work performed by the Asset Management’s Enterprise Real-Time Data Solutions (ERDS) team is unique in that they support specific operational technologies applications in all capacities. The team collects over one hundred thousand data points from multiple systems to be used for compliance reporting, incident investigation, operational efficiency, and many other utility needs.

The learning experiences acquired within Asset Management provides insight to different operational technologies used within different services and how those technologies are managed.  

*This is a summer only internship from May 26th through August 8th/14th depending on school schedule

An ASM ERDS Internship offers the following learning opportunities:

  • A high-level understanding of facility operations for all water, wastewater, gas, and electric services
  • Exposure to server and client software administration for operational technologies
  • High-level understanding of how collected operational data is used to design compliance water and wastewater reports
  • Collaboration with operations, engineering, environmentalist and data scientist
  • Utilize operational data to design data rich operational dashboards
  • Exposure to different industrial data protocols

In this position the ERDS intern will learn and help customers with operational data in multiple applications from our visualization tool to raw data in spreadsheets. They will also learn how a team navigates the responsibilities of maintaining a complex data collection system which supports over six hundred users. Assisting the team in application support will give an intern customer service support skills. 

Specifically, the following areas make up this internship position in ASM ERDS internship: 

  • Visualization design and optimization (30%)
    • Support operation groups replicate visualization screens from an older system to a newer web-based system. Review and optimize existing dashboards and data points
  • Review and assist with asset hierarchy and data validation (25%)
    • Assist the team in standardizing the asset framework structure and categories
  • Assist engineering teams with data analytic equations (15%)
    • Support operational facilities to recreate the operational performance equations needed
  • Application support and documentation (15%)
    • Support customers and staff with application issues and review existing documentation
  • Design programing scripts to assist in backup tasks and data collection. (15%)
    • Will use a programing language to automate data system backups and use AVEVA Pi libraries to create data pulling scripts


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
-  Exerts up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or small amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
-  Positions in this class typically require talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions within an office working environment.

*This is an on-site, non-remote/non-telecommuting position 
*Hourly rate is dependent on year completed of academic degree, e.g., second year complete, third year complete, etc. 
*Candidates MUST be enrolled in a degree seeking program (Associates/Bachelors/Masters) with a 2.5 GPA and be able to provide documentation if requested.  Enrollment in a certification program does not qualify.
