Job Description:

Collective Newsroom is looking to hire an experienced Bilingual Legal Reporter. The successful candidate will bring a sharp editorial vision and the ability to generate original and compelling story ideas. We are looking for a nuanced understanding of India's legal landscape – situating legal developments within broader socio-political context for both Indian and global audiences.

This is a senior role requiring fluency in English and Hindi across text, video, and audio formats. The reporter will be an integral contributor to BBC Indian Languages' digital and television output, as well as to BBC World Service Languages.

  • Work in partnership with other reporters and producers at base and other locations.
  • Ability to convey story and programme ideas and to contribute fully to the planning process for upcoming news events.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in Collective Newsroom and understands how individual differences can benefit the organisation.
  • Able to get one's message understood clearly by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and the nature of information.
  • The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
  • An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities


The Legal Reporter (Bilingual) will play a crucial role within BBC Indian Languages digital and TV output as well as for BBC World Service Languages.

  • Cover breaking news from the legal beat with speed, accuracy, and editorial judgment.
  • Research and write edit reports, explainers, and analytical pieces for publication across text, video, and audio platforms.
  • Collaborate with reporters and desk editors to ensure seamless, well-coordinated story coverage.
  • Proactively identify and flag significant legal developments.
  • Conceptualise and execute in-depth, long-form stories on India's legal system, embedding them within wider socio-political narratives.
  • To gather material for broadcast on news topics and events which is reflective of the audiences we serve.
  • To provide timely, specialist and self-assured news coverage and analysis of news and events of interest to the audiences.
  • Maintain regular and clear communication with the Editors ensuring everyone is briefed on own movements and contact numbers at all times throughout the assignment.
  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the health and safety policy.

Requirements

Knowledge, skills, training and experience

Experience of live broadcasting, including live breaking news with good on-screen presence, self-assured microphone voice and ability to communicate effectively with target audience.

  • A minimum of 10 years' experience reporting on and analysing legal affairs.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex legal developments into accessible, engaging content for general audiences.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Indian legal processes, institutions, and procedure.
  • Sound editorial judgment; ability to assess competing perspectives and produce balanced, impartial reporting.
  • Proficiency in both English and Hindi, across written and broadcast formats.
  • A law degree is advantageous, though not a prerequisite.
  • Demonstrate balanced and impartial judgement. Makes appropriate editorial decisions, taking account of conflicting views where necessary.
  • Demonstrable interest in new media which will include knowledge of how to maximise a story.
  • Work in partnership with other reporters and producers.
