About the RoleThis role is for someone who enjoys understanding coffee at every stage of its journey.
You'll evaluate coffees through cupping and physical analysis, work with producers to improve quality at origin, collaborate with our sourcing team, help establish our quality laboratory and systems, and ensure every coffee we export meets the expectations of specialty roasters.
You'll have the opportunity to work across green coffee, processing, sensory analysis, quality assurance, and even roasting, developing a deep understanding of what makes exceptional coffee.
Key Responsibilities
Coffee Quality & Cupping- Conduct cupping and sensory evaluation of green coffee samples using SCA protocols.
- Perform physical analysis, including moisture, defects, density, screen grading, and other quality parameters.
- Prepare cupping notes, quality reports, and technical information for internal teams and international buyers.
- Evaluate and approve coffees for procurement based on Orchard Gate's quality standards.
Quality Systems & Laboratory- Assist in setting up and managing Orchard Gate's cupping laboratory and quality processes.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for sample handling, cupping, physical analysis, and quality documentation.
- Maintain calibration, organization, and inventory of quality equipment and laboratory supplies.
- Build and maintain a structured database of samples, cupping scores, producer information, and quality records.
Producer & Sourcing Support- Work closely with the sourcing team and producers to improve coffee quality and processing outcomes.
- Provide technical feedback on post-harvest processing, fermentation, drying, and consistency.
- Participate in plantation visits and support quality improvement initiatives when required.
Operations & Coordination- Coordinate sample movement, inventory, and documentation.
- Support export quality documentation and shipment readiness.
- Assist with operational coordination, vendor follow-ups, and other administrative tasks that support the smooth functioning of the business.
- Contribute to building efficient systems and processes as the company grows.
Who We're Looking For- 5+ years of experience in coffee quality, cupping, plantation operations, post-harvest processing, and specialty coffee.
- Strong understanding of green coffee evaluation and SCA cupping standards.
- Genuine curiosity about coffee—from farming and processing to roasting and sensory evaluation.
- Experience working with specialty processing methods and quality improvement.
- Organized, analytical, and comfortable balancing technical work with operational responsibilities.
- Willingness to travel to coffee-growing regions whenever required.
Preferred Qualifications- CQI Arabica and/or Robusta Q Grader certification.
- PGDQM (Post Graduate Diploma in Quality Management in Coffee) from the Coffee Board of India.
- SCA Coffee Skills Program certifications.
- Experience in roasting, sample roasting, or roast profile evaluation.
- Experience setting up quality systems or cupping laboratories.
- Knowledge of Kannada or other regional languages is an advantage.
