Under direct supervision, performs technical duties associated with construction inspections and monitoring of Capital Improvement projects, Private Development projects, Construction of roads and bridges, and other projects as assigned. 

Please Note: The hiring range for this position is determined by qualifications.
 Technician: $45,230 to $49,753
 Inspector I: $48,680 to $53,548
 Inspector II: $52,236 to $57,459

Position Duties

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION TECHNICIAN

  • This position is responsible for learning the skills and responsibilities of the Construction Inspector I and II
  • Inspects construction projects during construction, alterations, or repairs for compliance with the approved plans, specifications, codes, contracts, and safe construction practices
  • Records and maintains daily field reports on all projects of responsibility
  • Reviews pay applications and budgets for Capital Improvement Projects and provide relevant recommendations to the Capital Projects Manager
  • Reviews and comments on plans and specifications during the design and/or permitting stage of construction.
  • Assist in developing construction projects 
  • Assist surveying department as needed
  • Assists with developing projects during design by helping with drafting, data collection, and plan review.
  • Other duties as assigned 

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR I 
  • Inspects projects in the process of construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, contracts, and safe construction practices
  • Ensures appropriate action is taken for the corrections of violations
  • Coordinates with materials testing laboratories for proper and timely materials testing
  • Enforces regulations pertaining to OSHA requirements for safety
  • Ensures that as-built plans reflect actual field conditions
  • Records and maintains daily field reports on all projects of responsibility
  • Reviews and comments on plans and specifications during the design and/or permitting stage of construction.
  • Assist supervisor in implementing procedures and policies related to inspections within the Engineering Department
  • Assist with developing projects during design by helping with drafting, data collection, and plan review
  • Assist in developing construction projects
  • Assist surveying department as needed
  • Other duties as assigned 

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR II
  • Inspects projects in the process of construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, contracts, and safe construction practices
  • Provides scheduling oversight of capital projects and private development field inspections to ensure timely and seamless service to those projects
  • Reviews pay applications and budgets for Capital Improvement Projects and provide relevant recommendations to the Capital Projects Manager
  • Ensures appropriate action is taken for the corrections of violations
  • Coordinates with materials testing laboratories for proper and timely materials testing.
  • Enforces regulations pertaining to OSHA requirements for safety
  • Interprets and inspects Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans
  • Ensures that as-built plans reflect actual field conditions
  • Records and maintains daily field reports on all projects of responsibility
  • Attends meetings and functions relating to inspection
  • Reviews and comments on plans and specifications during the design and/or permitting stage of construction 
  • Assist in developing construction projects 
  • Assist surveying department as needed
  • Assists with developing projects during design by helping with drafting, data collection, and plan review   
  • Assists supervisor in implementing procedures and policies relative to inspections within the Engineering Department
  • Assists supervisor with establishing and revising engineering inspection procedures, practices and rules in conformance with Engineering policies
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential functions of this position include but not limited to driving, working with and around others; dealing with interruptions; hearing and speech for ordinary communication; finger dexterity for office work; outdoor work. 

Minimum Qualifications

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTION TECHNICIAN
High School Diploma or GED and one year working experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR I
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, survey, construction administration, construction technology or any related field; or two years of experience inspecting construction projects; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
Must have the following Certifications within 1 year of hire:
- ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Service Association) Flagger
- ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Service Association) Traffic Control Technician
- ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Service Association) Traffic Control Supervisor
- ACI (American Concrete Institute) Field Technician 1
- ATTI (Arizona Technical Testing Institute) Field Certification
- OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) 30-Hour Certification

CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR II
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, architecture, construction administration, construction technology or closely related field and two years of experience inspecting construction projects; or four  years of experience inspecting construction projects; or, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. 
Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
Must have the following Certifications, or approved equal within one year of hire:

This position is safety sensitive.

The Ideal candidate should have experience in construction inspections. Have sufficient knowledge and understating related to materials testing of soils, concrete, and asphalt. As well as education in engineering and construction management to perform the duties of this position.

    • Principles, practices, and technical aspects of civil engineering construction as applied to public works and private development construction
    • The major types of public works construction, materials and methods Standard construction practices, 
    • Techniques utilized in construction project administration
    • Laws and regulations applicable to design and construction of public works projects and facilities in the State of Arizona
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Local, regional and state engineering standards and specifications and their relationship to public works and private development projects
    • Materials testing
    • Project management
    • Construction project scheduling
  • Ability to:

    • Local, regional and state engineering standards and specifications and their relationship to public works and private development projects

    • Civil engineering
    • Project management
    • Construction project scheduling
  • Ability to:
