About the Department

The purpose of this classification is to perform specialized and technical work functions in assisting with performing autopsies.



Position Duties

Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; confers with co-workers, assists with complex situations, and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing Forensic Technician I and Interns regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; assists with scheduling of staff and staff training; and provides input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations of Forensic Technician I and Interns to the appropriate supervisor.

Assists with preparing decedents for autopsy: labels and identifies body; takes standard height and weight measurements; collects, itemizes and records personal impacts; and removes clothing and medical intervention.

Collects and processes evidence: collects sexual assault kits and body fluids; draws blood for testing; obtains and submits microbiology cultures; obtains DNA cards; obtains gun residue and trace evidence at examination; utilizes established laboratory techniques and processes, including presumptive testing; retrieves other physical evidence such as latent fingerprints, fingernail clippings, tape lifts, and hair; and completes and submits detailed reports regarding the testing, evaluation and comparing of evidence.

Removes and examines organs: opens body according to industry standards; examines and assists pathologist with examining body cavity and organs; returns organs to body; and sews and prepares body for release.

Captures photographic and radiologic images: takes digital images before, during and after autopsy; takes x-rays to locate projectiles or other items; prepares and develops x-rays; and maintains related documentation for review by pathologists, law enforcement, courtroom proceedings and other authorized agencies.

Maintains inventory and sanitation of supplies and equipment: ensures adequate supplies to complete work assignments; initiates requests for replacement supplies and equipment; stocks inventory; performs routine sanitation of autopsy suite; and washes, dries and puts away laundry.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate Degree in Funeral Services, Forensic Science, or related field required; supplemented by one year of experience in assisting with autopsies; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Minimum Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.

Other Qualifications

Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of significant weight (up to 250 pounds).

Sensory Requirements

Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, hazardous materials, toxic agents, water hazards, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
