Job Description
As a SUE Crew Chief (SUE Technician III), you will lead field operations focused on the identification, designation, and documentation of underground utilities. In this role, you will oversee daily crew activities, ensure safe and efficient field practices, and provide critical utility data that helps engineers, contractors, and developers avoid costly conflicts during design and construction. Key Responsibilities
- Lead field investigations and oversee daily SUE crew operations.
- Utilize RF locating and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment to designate underground utilities.
- Perform vacuum excavation test holes to safely expose buried utilities.
- Conduct tailgate safety meetings and prepare site-specific Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Set up and implement Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) signage and traffic control measures.
- Operate land surveying equipment to accurately document utility locations.
- Read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and utility records.
- Maintain trucks, tools, and equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and organized field operations.
- Train and mentor junior SUE technicians on proper locating, test hole, and safety procedures.
- Communicate field findings, project updates, and technical issues with project managers and team members.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with ASCE 38-22 standards and company quality expectations.
Qualifications
- 3–6 years of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) experience.
- Proficiency in RF locating and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment.
- Experience operating vacuum excavation equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and utility records.
- Strong mathematical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- RF and GPR locating certification preferred.
- Land surveying experience preferred.
