The Construction Inspector inspects the installation of public and private infrastructure improvements, conducts field observations and testing coordination, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations in order to protect public health, safety, and welfare. This position serves as the City’s representative on development and infrastructure projects and works closely with contractors, engineers, developers, utility providers, and the public throughout the construction process.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the City’s representative on private development and public infrastructure projects to ensure construction activities follow approved plans, specifications, standards, and regulations.
- Perform daily inspections of public and private development construction projects, including site improvements, sanitary sewer, water, stormwater, and street infrastructure.
- Coordinate with City staff, contractors, developers, site representatives, utility providers, and the public to resolve concerns and issues that arise during construction activities.
- Monitor testing of new sanitary sewers and water mains to verify quality assurance standards prior to infrastructure being placed into public service.
- Review concrete, soil, and base rock testing reports to verify compliance with approved specifications and construction standards.
- Review and comment on as-built drawings to ensure completed improvements are constructed within acceptable tolerances and that deviations from approved plans are properly documented.
- Verify utility easements accurately reflect the final as-built condition of installed utilities.
- Manage work occurring within the City right-of-way, including restoration compliance, utility damage prevention coordination, and traffic control review.
- Inspect stormwater erosion control best management practices (BMPs) related to construction activities.
- Inspect projects for compliance with Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP) and applicable environmental regulations.
- Prepare inspection reports, document findings, notify responsible parties of deficiencies, and monitor corrective actions to ensure timely resolution.
- Issue citations or notices of violation for non-compliance with applicable City codes, ordinances, and construction standards.
