About the Department

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Vehicle Service Worker performs routine, entry-level maintenance, fueling, and servicing of City vehicles and equipment to support safe and efficient fleet operations. This classification represents the entry level in the Fleet Maintenance series and involves assisting mechanics and technical staff with inspections, basic repairs, lubrication, and shop upkeep. Work is performed under close supervision, requiring attention to detail and adherence to established safety standards. Incumbents are expected to obtain one (1) ASE certification within twelve (12) months of employment, with advancement opportunities based on demonstrated proficiency in mechanical repair and preventive maintenance.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Lubricate vehicles and equipment; check and replenish fluids; assist with oil and filter changes and tire repairs. 
  • Perform basic mechanical inspections for leaks, worn belts and hoses, lighting, and fluid levels under the direction of a mechanic. 
  • Assist mechanics with general repairs on gasoline, diesel, propane, and CNG engines, as well as drivetrain, brake, and hydraulic systems. 
  • Perform minor services and repairs on vehicles and small equipment under supervision. 
  • Conduct road tests and operate fleet assets as directed to assess performance and verify service results. 
  • Steam-clean engines and maintain cleanliness of the shop and work areas. 
  • Transport vehicles and equipment to and from departments, job sites, and external vendors for specialized services. 
  • Assist with recordkeeping by updating fleet maintenance data in the management system and tracking completed work. 
  • Respond to vehicle, equipment, and fuel station issues outside of normal working hours as assigned. 
  • Operate City vehicles and equipment safely and in accordance with established procedures. 
  • Participate in safety meetings and required training; assist with emergency response activities as needed. 
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and one (1) year of experience in general motor vehicle and equipment repair.
License(s)/Certifications:
  • Must possess a valid California Class “C” driver’s license upon hire and maintain it throughout employment with the City of Victorville.
  • Ability to obtain a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within nine (9) months of employment, as determined by the Fleet Manager.
  • Must obtain one (1) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
  
Knowledge of: 
  • Methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in servicing, cleaning, and performing minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment. 
  • Lubrication, fueling, and preventive maintenance procedures for gasoline-, diesel-, propane-, and CNG-powered equipment. 
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices in vehicle maintenance environments.
  • Proper use and care of hand tools, pressure washers, and cleaning equipment. 
  • Recordkeeping and data entry practices related to fleet maintenance systems. 
  • Basic mechanical systems and vehicle components. 
  • Applicable City policies, procedures, and traffic safety regulations.

Skill and Ability to:  
  • Perform routine vehicle servicing, fueling, and maintenance safely and efficiently.
  • Identify and report basic mechanical issues and safety concerns.
  • Safely operate vehicles, equipment, and shop tools.
  • Follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Maintain records and complete service documentation in fleet management systems.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of shop and fueling areas.
  • Apply established safety, environmental, and hazardous material handling practices.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.

This position primarily works in an outdoor automotive repair shop environment and is exposed to varying weather conditions. Positions in this class require frequent balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and performing repetitive motions, with or without reasonable accommodation. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the workday), in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the workday), and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of the workday) to move objects. Physical demands exceed those defined for Heavy Work. Incumbents may be exposed to machinery and moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, high noise levels, travel, and environmental conditions such as extreme temperature variations, fumes, smoke, grease, odors, and dust. Incumbents must hold tools or vehicle parts while lying on their back beneath a vehicle; push, pull, bend, twist, lean, stretch, and reach into and under equipment; climb onto or crawl under equipment while carrying tools; maintain balance on ladders, vehicle bumpers, or slippery surfaces; hold parts steady; and thread fasteners underneath equipment without clear visibility. Incumbents must be able to see and hear within a normal range, with or without correction; respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours, including weekends; and work an irregular schedule that may include weekends, holidays, evenings, and/or varying shifts.
