About the Department
To safely transport equipment and materials to and from job sites. Perform minor maintenance on trucks and equipment. Perform regular labor duties and use various hand tools to maintain and repair water and sewer mains. Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., nights and weekends as required, and on-call.
Position Duties
- Drive and operate dump truck.
- Operate loader, backhoe, and forklift in loading and unloading materials and equipment.
- Keep the truck clean and in safe operating condition
- Assist crews in repairing, maintaining, and installing water and sewer systems.
- Assist crews with manual labor as needed.
- Cut concrete, ductile iron, PVC, clay, and cast-iron pipes.
- Pour and finish concrete.
- Lay, haul, and finish asphalt.
- Operate jackhammer, power tools, hand tools, etc.
- Respond to emergency calls after regular working hours if needed.
- Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods and safely lift carry, push, and pull up to 100 lbs. Must be able to bend, stoop, and kneel for short periods.
- Must be able to work in inclement weather.
- Other duties as assigned.
NEEDED SKILLS - Must be able to understand and follow directions and instructions

- Must be able to lift and carry 80 lbs.
- Must be able to safely climb onto equipment, balance, stoop, bend and crouch.
- Must be able to use and operate various hand tools: shovels, rakes, saws, hammers, ratchets, and sockets.
- Must be able to operate various gas-powered saws, chain saws, and hydraulic or electric pumps.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with other employees.
- Must be able to operate equipment in/around other underground utilities in a safe manner.
- Must be able to respond within 45 minutes while on-call.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
A high school diploma or GED is required; one (1) year of job-related experience is preferred but not required. Must be familiar with hand tools. Must operate a loader, backhoe, and forklift to load truck materials.
Must be able to operate dump trucks and light duty trucks, including 1-ton, ¾-ton, and ½-ton varieties and various trailers. Must have Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement and a good driving record throughout employment. Must
possess a TCEQ Class “C” Water Distribution Class “1” Wastewater Collection License or can obtain one within one (1) year

The City of Tyler will accept two years of relevant experience in place of each year of college required in the job description. Four years of relevant experience will be considered in place of an Associate's Degree, and eight years of relevant experience will be considered in place of a Bachelor's Degree. Any experience required in the Minimum qualifications is in addition to years of experience substituted for a degree.
