About the Department
Under the general direction of a supervisor is responsible for the installation and maintenance of all traffic signs, layout work and pavement markings throughout the City. Duties include the application of paint, thermoplastic and epoxy pavement markings the operation of equipment used to fabricate, install and maintain all signs, lines, safety markings and serving as crew leader for above activities as required. Assists in winter and emergency Highway operations, (e.g. snow removal, plowing), as needed. Performs related work as required.
Supervision Received: Under general supervision of Traffic Maintenance Foreman, Traffic Engineer and Transportation Bureau Chief.

Position Duties
- Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of specialized equipment which requires considerable manipulative skill in the operation thereof, such as paint machines, post drivers; hydraulic and self-contained.
- Control traffic through the work areas in a safe and efficient manner. Implements procedures to safeguard the public and other workers in the area, and protect equipment and property from damage.
- May be required to perform other tasks at the direction of the Traffic Maintenance Foreman, including but not necessarily limited to intermittently assisting other Transportation bureau staff.
- Acts as a labor resource for traffic maintenance. May utilize bucket truck and other equipment, including, but not limited to drills, saws, compressors and other construction equipment.
- Participates in the layout and painting of crosswalks, arrows, legends, long lines and other pavement markings using both pavement marking machines or other applicable equipment (paint and applied powder), as well as paint by hand; uses paint machine and operates line grinding machine.
- Works with outside vendors as needed on various elements of pavement markings, marking removal, and installation of various crosswalk and roadway treatments.
- Collects data and makes sketches/notes of existing line layout and re-establishes after paving.
- Participates in the layout and marking of parking stalls, both on-street and within parking lots using pavement marking machines.
- Installs traffic signs, reflectors and traffic appurtenances. Contacts Call Before You Dig. Makes signs in accordance with MUTCD regulations.
- Participates in Traffic Maintenance work order and asset management system by assessing pavement markings, sign conditions, verifying and documenting locations, documenting maintenance and keeping records; both manual and electronically.
- Carries and installs traffic maintenance barricades, portable signs, temporary delineators and speed humps as required.
- Operates large snowplow vehicle, pickup truck and snow removal hand tools.
- Cuts brush to maintain sight lines of signs / traffic signal system.
- Calls out for emergency work
- Determines retro-reflectivity of signs
- Complies with all Transportation Bureau safety program requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ability to respond in all types of weather and during all hours of both day and night as the need or emergency arises.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, machines, and construction equipment used in highway maintenance programs and related mechanical and/or building trades.
- Familiarity with the current "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" including knowledge of proper location and installation of signs and pavement markings.
- Considerable knowledge of functions, operating methods and care of equipment used to install and maintain traffic signs and pavement markings.
- Considerable knowledge of Work Zone Safety practices, including Part VI of the MUTCD.
- Ability to instruct personnel making operating repairs to equipment and assist when necessary.
- Ability to read maps/plans and have a working knowledge of the various street networks.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to lift 20 lbs. constantly and heavy weight of 100lbs. occasionally throughout the day, pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, bending and cleaning.
- Ability to operate City’s timekeeping software, asset management and work order systems.
- Exceptional muscular coordination, alertness, good eyesight, including freedom from color blindness, good hearing, physical strength, agility and stamina and ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to operate utility truck, line grinding machines and other vehicles/ equipment.
Other Qualifications
Graduation from High School or Trade School, and (2) two years progressive experience performing skilled work in highway and traffic maintenance programs or related mechanical and/or building trades with one year of work experience in the installation of traffic control signs and pavement markings. Certification in Work Zone Safety/Flagger is desired.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: There will not be written examination. Candidates will be evaluated based on education, training and experience.
