General Summary
The Maintenance Worker I position is responsible for performing repetitive manual and semi-skilled work, which does not require a high degree of experience, for example ensuring the upkeep and functionality of the City’s facilities, streets, and roads, with a primary focus on the Town Center District (pictured below). This position involves performing a variety of maintenance tasks, including cleaning, painting, routine inspections of public facilities, repairs, and improvements to City-owned infrastructure. Responsibilities also include facility and street lighting maintenance, routine pressure cleaning, and addressing any safety hazards to enhance the appearance and safety of the Town Center District.
While the primary area of focus is the Town Center District, the Maintenance Worker I position may also be assigned to work in other locations throughout the City, and to work with City contractors for specified maintenance services, as needed. This flexibility ensures that the overall maintenance needs of the City are met effectively. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to public service, possess basic maintenance skills, and be able to work collaboratively within a team to contribute to the beautification and functionality of the community.
Supervision Received & Exercised
The Maintenance Worker I position exercises no supervision and works under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Public Works & Engineering/Superintendent. This position is classified as a non-exempt, full-time position. General assignments and work methods are prescribed in detail and work is usually performed subject to frequent supervision and inspection.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Primarily responsible for the overall appearance and functionality of the Town Center District, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors.
- Works alongside landscaping crews involved in maintenance, planting/transplanting tree installations, and pesticide and fertilization applications, as needed and when scheduled.
- Participates in the installation and repairs of street signs, pot holes, curbs, storm drain cleaning and street sweeping, as needed and when scheduled.
- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of facilities, streets, sidewalks, and public spaces to ensure safety and cleanliness of all City-owned facilities.
- Perform routinely scheduled (and as-needed) landscaping and groundskeeping tasks, including mowing, trimming, planting flowers, and maintaining green spaces within the Town Center District.
- Address minor repairs to City buildings, including the municipal parking garage, light fixtures, and infrastructure, such as patching walls, fixing minor electrical issues, such as replacing light bulbs.
- Regularly perform trash and debris removal tasks to ensure that public areas are free of litter and debris by regularly collecting trash, stick-picking, emptying the City’s public trash receptacles when they are full, and maintaining overall cleanliness.
- Inspect and maintain traffic and informational signs, ensuring visibility and compliance with regulations.
- Perform seasonal tasks, such as holiday lighting and decorations, and preparing, securing and breaking-down City facilities for different City-sponsored special events and holidays.
- Work with other City departments or contractors on larger projects, as needed.
- Assist in emergency management operations, preparations and response efforts, as needed.
- Perform routine safety checks, monitor and report safety hazards or maintenance needs of Town Center District facilities to supervisors to ensure the well-being of the public and City staff.
- Maintain logs of work performed, including completed tasks, materials used, and any issues encountered via the City’s SeeClickFix application.
- Receives and responds to trouble and complaint report. Ensures that the problems are resolved.
- Maintains cleanliness, safety and functionality of the elevators in the municipal parking garage. Works with City contractors and vendors to ensure issues are addressed effectively and efficiently.
- Occasionally interact with the public, providing information and assistance regarding maintenance-related inquiries.
- Maintains an inventory of tools and supplies related to the Division’s work. Initiates and follows up with any tools and supply purchases through notification to main office, as required.
- Ensures the proper use of tools and safety equipment. Ensures the proper care and storage of all equipment.
- Performs a variety of landscaping duties such as: placing sod, sowing seed, transplanting, cultivating, and weeding. Cuts grass with a small mower, gives general care to lawns parkways, streets, and alleys. Assists in pruning, fertilizing, and general care of shrubs, trees, and grass. Digs levels and spreads fill, rock and sand. Waters various plant and landscaping materials.
- Cleans sprinkler heads, uses a variety of hand tools and hand help power equipment.
- Loads and unloads trucks, as needed.
- Participates in the maintenance, cleaning, and repair of streets, and other City facilities and installations.
- Removes graffiti from street signs, structures and City-owned properties, facilities, etc., as needed.
- Performs general painting tasks with knowledge of appropriate use of interior versus exterior paint based on environmental conditions and surface requirements.
- Cleans and washes City vehicles and other motor pool/automotive equipment, as needed.
- Must be willing to work weekends, if needed.
- Performs other duties as needed or required by the Assistant Director of Public Works & Engineering/Superintendent.
Minimum Qualifications Required
- Must possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of one (1) year of related experience is required.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to perform manual work, often outside and under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
- Ability to acquire knowledge and proficiency in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of painting techniques and materials, including the ability to determine the appropriate use of interior versus exterior paint based on environmental conditions and surface requirements.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
