The Wastewater Maintenance Worker positions reside in the Maintenance Services Division of Public Works Department and report directly to the Wastewater Maintenance Superintendent. 
 
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Wastewater Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class in the Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker series. This position performs routine tasks and duties using hand tools, small power tools and light vehicles and equipment. Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skills as positions allocated to the Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker II class and exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level after gaining the knowledge, skill, experience, licenses, and certifications which meet the qualifications for, and after demonstrating the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class. The Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker I class is further distinguished from the Wastewater Utility Maintenance II class by not requiring a Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake and tanker endorsements on their driver’s license at the time of hire.
Pay Range: $33.10 - $40.28 Hourly

Wastewater Maintenance Worker II is the full journey level class within the Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker series. This position performs skilled and specialized wastewater inspection, maintenance, operations, repairs and construction duties; operate eductor combination high velocity water/vacuum sewer cleaning equipment, closed-circuit TV equipment, portable generators, rodding machines, pickup and dump trucks and other specialized equipment as required; may serve as lead worker to Maintenance Worker I’s, part-time, and seasonal employees as assigned.  Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work team. The Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker II is distinguished from the Wastewater Utility Maintenance Worker I by the possession of a commercial endorsement on the driver’s license and by more wastewater maintenance and repair work experience.
Pay Range: $36.54 - $44.46 Hourly

Position Duties

The scope of the job is to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, installation, inspection and construction of wastewater collection facilities, including sewage lift (pump) stations, grinder pumps, pressure and gravity-flow pipelines, manholes, emergency power generators, buildings, grounds and light vehicle maintenance; to assure the safety of vehicle and pedestrian traffic; to utilize the City’s asset management system; and to operate a variety of heavy and light vehicles, specialized equipment, hand and power tools.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience 
Level I: One year wastewater maintenance or construction experience or related field.
Level II: Three years responsible wastewater construction, maintenance and/or repair work experience.
 
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid state-issued Driver's License
First aid/CPR certificate, Washington State flagging certification, and confined space entry certification, or ability to obtain within 3 months.

Level I only: Wastewater Collection Specialist (WWC) I, or ability to obtain within one year.

Level II only:  Must possess a valid Driver's License with Class B commercial endorsement with air brake and tanker endorsement. Wastewater Collection Specialist (WWC) II, or ability to obtain within one year.


Job offer to the most successful candidate for Level II is contingent upon driving history review and a pre-employment drug test and completion of a drug and alcohol background check if the individual has performed DOT safety-sensitive functions for any employer in the previous (2) years.

Job offer to the most successful candidate for Level I is contingent upon driving history review.

Environmental Conditions:
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease; potentially hazardous chemicals; inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work on slippery or uneven surfaces; work in confined spaces and potential exposure to toxic gases and infectious materials.

Conditions Of Employment:

  • Establishment of employment authorization and identity at the time of hire. The City is not able to sponsor work visas.
  • Possession of valid state-issued driver's license with successful results of pre-employment check of driving record with an “acceptable” rating or better according to the City’s Using City Vehicles  administrative policy.  
  • A successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • WW UMW II - A commercial driver's license (CDL) and a related valid medical certification.
