About the Department
Shoreline Metro provides fixed route and paratransit public transit services to a metropolitan area of 70,000 including the cities of Sheboygan and Sheboygan Falls and the Village of Kohler. Annually, over 550,000 rides are provided covering over 500,000 service miles on 11 fixed routes and four school day trippers. Metro Connection, a division of Shoreline Metro, provides demand-responsive trips to individuals with disabilities or over 60 years of age. Over 25,000 rides are provided annually covering around 200,000 miles.
The Parking Utility maintains all public parking in downtown, Riverfront, South Pier and Heritage Square including on- and off-street metered, reserved parking and off-street free parking options. The Parking Utility maintains over 15 public parking lots, 20 blocks of on-street parking meters, 500 off-street parking meters, several acres of lawn maintenance at the Industrial Park, weed control in downtown, and flower planter watering and maintenance.

On-Demand (Paratransit) Bus Drivers serve as frontline employees of Metro Connection, the demand-response, accessible ADA public transit solution for the Sheboygan Urbanized Area and beyond. On-Demand Bus Drivers perform essential daily tasks including the professional, safe, dependable and courteous operation of transit buses and friendly customer service and support. On-Demand Bus Drivers are an essential and critical part of the Shoreline Metro team.
Position Duties
- Safely and responsibly operate transit buses and vehicles in accordance with departmental policies and procedures according to daily manifests.
- Perform effective and proper Safety and Security Inspection Report on assigned buses.
- Greet customers in a courteous and professional manner and provide customer support as needed with sensitivity, courtesy and tact.
- Properly track fare media and ridership for each customer using the provided tablets each time a customer boards and exits the bus.
- Ensure accuracy of all customer ridership data through careful and proper entering of data into tablets.
- Enforce departmental policies and procedures and ensure customers follow all policies and procedures and maintain proper conduct on board all buses.
- Assist all customers with safe and proper boarding and alighting of transit buses including safe and proper use of the vehicle’s electric lift feature.
- Ensure safe and effective securement of customers and their mobility devices using departmental policies and procedures.
- Act as a professional representative of Shoreline Metro and the City of Sheboygan.
- Work in a team environment and be able to work independently under supervision at all times.
- On-time performance including timely operation of routes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have a safe driving record.
- 1-2 years minimum of verifiable driving experience of commercial vehicles (experience operating a bus is preferred but not required).
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a Class D license; may be required to possess or be able to obtain a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with passenger “P” endorsement and no air brake restrictions if operating a public transit bus. (Valid CDL must be obtained in a timely fashion during training if required.)
- Must pass a State of Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicle background check with no DUI convictions within the past ten (10) years if required to possess CDL.
- Must pass a State of Wisconsin Criminal background check.
Other Qualifications
- Must be able to properly and safely operate up to a 35-foot passenger buses and service vehicles.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, extra hours and/or overtime as required by department needs and must be available for “on-call” or emergency work.
- Must successfully complete pre-employment drug test and physical exam, orientation training and 6-month probationary period. Must pass a physical examination for drivers and maintain those standards as a condition of employment.
- Must submit to FTA required drug and alcohol testing requirements including but not limited to preemployment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion testing as a condition of employment.
- Must possess good communication skills and be able to follow and communicate oral or written instructions and have the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form.
- Must be able to demonstrate an ability to read, understand, retain and recite information in training manuals, notices and standard operating procedures.
- Possess the ability to sit for long periods of time, stand, and walk. Must be able to bend, kneel, twist, and reach for purposes of securing mobility devices.
- Must be able to memorize, understand and drive assigned published bus routes.
- Must possess ability to work in a fast-paced environment with times of high stress and anxiety.
- Must have the ability to reasonably assist passengers on and off the bus with or without the assistance of a mobility aid.
- Ability to work with elderly and disabled individuals.
