The City of Seward is recruiting for a Streets Equipment Operator / Maintenance Mechanic
This position is responsible for performing skilled work in the operation, mechanical repair, and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and other specialized equipment.
Position Duties
DETAILED WORK DUTIES:
- Operates various pieces of road maintenance and other equipment and tools as directed.
- Performs repair and preventative maintenance on a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles, pumps, generators, machines, and specialized equipment, including structural welding on heavy duty equipment, consistent with department and industry standards and best practices.
- Assists with City facilities and streets maintenance and other capital improvement projects.
- Creates and maintains work, progress, supply, and time records.
- Observes established safety guidelines/procedures; participates in safety training activities.
- Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Building maintenance as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or GED; supplemented by four years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of heavy-duty equipment, education in repair and maintenance, and/or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and ability:
- Valid driver’s license. CDL preferred or required to obtain CDL within 6 months.
- Applicable federal, state and local regulations and safety codes.
- Electrical, plumbing, welding, mechanical, painting, minor construction, sign making and general laboring procedures.
- Gasoline, diesel and electrical automotive equipment, components and sub-assemblies, shop tools, properties of materials utilized in automotive equipment
- Oral and written communications.
- Troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; compute rates, ratios, and percentages as applies to job duties.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, effectively present information and respond to questions from co-workers, customers, and the general public.
- Multi-task and prioritize work.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
- Must complete ICS 100, 200,700 and 800 within first 6 months of employment.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed while operating heavy equipment or in the city maintenance shop and facilities and occasionally in an office setting. The employee is frequently exposed to noise, odors, dust, fumes, mechanical parts, heavy machinery, and suspended loads; occasionally is exposed to dim lighting, wetness and humidity, extreme heat or cold, vibrations, and electrical currents; and rarely is exposed to smoke and toxic agents.
