The Opportunity
The City of San Gabriel Fire Department (SGFD) is seeking qualified candidates for Firefighter-Paramedic. Position Duties
Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Firefighter-Paramedic performs the full range of fire safety and prevention activities; responds to emergency medical service (EMS) incidents, fire alarms, rescues, and other types of routine and emergency calls for service. Day-to-day duties include responding to emergency medical incidents, structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, spills, releases, and numerous other types of calls including routine and non-emergency calls for service. The Firefighter-Paramedic must also effectively write incident reports and memoranda, fill out forms, perform public education, make emergency/disaster preparations, maintain station facilities and apparatus, and perform other related and/or special duties as assigned.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsible for the rapid and efficient performance of specialized duties under emergency conditions that may involve considerable personal hazard; connects and lays hoses; connects hoses to hydrants, pumps, and nozzles; rescues endangered persons; uses cutting and forcible entry tools; enters burning buildings with high-pressure hose lines; and operates nozzles and directs streams of water as assigned.
Ventilates smoke and gases from burning buildings; assists in operations to ensure that fires are completely extinguished; carries, raises, lowers, and climbs ladders; assists in salvage and clean-up operations; may operate a rescue ambulance as necessary; and follows all fire safety rules and regulations.
Administers basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS); responsible for maintaining all pharmaceuticals at the Fire station and on the rescue ambulance; administers medications as directed by protocol and as directed by the base hospital; makes medical decisions depending on the needs of the situation; and operates and maintains all BLS/ALS equipment.
Cleans and services all firefighter equipment and tools; inspects and tests equipment carried on fire trucks; assists in the maintenance of clean and orderly conditions in and around the Fire station; and tests, washes, and dries hoses.
Drills with engine company members; completes training in all pertinent fire techniques, CERT, EMS, CE, and specialist training; studies fire hazards and firefighting techniques; attends drills and staff conferences; studies the City’s water supply, geography, and department rules and regulations; conducts fire prevention inspections; and aids in the general enforcement of laws and ordinances.
Responds to questions, concerns, and requests for service from the public; educates the community on fire prevention and safety; and resolves complaints.
Continuously participate in and complete emergency medical services continuing education credits, firefighting proficiency training, paramedic training, in-house educational programs, and city-wide employee training programs.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for Firefighter-Paramedic, candidates must satisfy the following:
Be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment.
Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Possess a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
Possess proof of passing the Biddle Abilities Test or CPAT, with passing score attained within 12 months of appointment.
Possess a certificate of completion from a California State Fire Marshal’s Office accredited fire academy or possess a California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I Certificate.
Possess a valid California Paramedic License (EMT-P).
Must attain a Los Angeles County EMT-P accreditation within three (3) months of appointment.
Must maintain continuous accreditation to practice as an EMT-P in Los Angeles County throughout employment.
Desirable Qualifications
The following certifications and experience are not required but are much desired for this position, and as such, each of the following are given consideration and merit during the evaluation, assessment, and selection process for this position.
- Possession of a California Specialized Training Institute Hazardous Materials FRO or FRO-D certification.
- Possession of a California Incident Command Certification System (CICCS) FF1, FF2 or ENGB certification.
- Possession of an American Heart Association ACLS, PALS or PEPP certification.
- Six (6) or more months experience as an Auxiliary Firefighter with the City of San Gabriel Fire Department, or similar Fire Service Agency/District.
Additional Requirements
The following knowledge, skills and abilities are also required for this position:
- Demonstrable knowledge of fire suppression, emergency medical services, and equipment and tools related to fire operations; first aid principles and procedures; and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Demonstrable knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; business letter writing and other document preparation; and modern office methods, procedures, and equipment including the use of a computer, copier, facsimile machine, scanners, calculator, and various computer applications and software packages.
- Demonstrable knowledge of fiscal, statistical, and administrative research and report preparation methods; records management principles and procedures including record keeping and filing principles and practices; methods and techniques of proper phone etiquette; and customer service and public relations methods and techniques.
- Demonstrable ability to learn firefighting techniques and procedures with skill and apply such techniques to specific situations; gather, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence and reach sound conclusions; act quickly and calmly in emergencies; understand and carry out oral and written directions; correctly interpret and explain applicable laws, codes, and regulations; and observe fire safety principles and work in a safe manner.
- Demonstrable ability to prepare clear and concise technical and administrative reports including accurate tables, schedules, summaries, and other materials in narrative form; establish and maintain various data collection, record keeping, tracking, filing, and reporting systems; and maintain office and specialized files.
- Demonstrable ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing, which includes using tact and discretion when dealing with the public, elected officials, and City staff and understand and follow oral and written directions as provided.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds or more; prolonged sitting, standing, walking, running, jumping, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities; get from one location to another in the course of doing business; near and far vision and the ability to distinguish colors and acute hearing; drive motorized vehicles; and operate a variety of fire equipment.
- Ability to work effectively in a standard office setting and outdoors.
- Ability to endure tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving circumstances.
- Ability to travel to different locations and endure exposure to inclement weather conditions, noise, vibration, dust, or potentially hazardous chemicals.
- Ability to work effectively in hectic and noisy work environments due to a high volume of people, loud talking, traffic, loud electronic devices, and frequent interruptions from telephones, City staff, and/or members of the public.
- Ability to drive motorized vehicles and work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
Probationary RequirementsFirefighter-Paramedic appointees must successfully complete a probationary period upon hire in accordance with the following:
- Internally promoted appointees shall be subject to completing a minimum 6-month probationary period in the Firefighter-Paramedic classification. Candidates promoted internally from Firefighter-EMT to Firefighter-Paramedic must complete a minimum of 12 months of total probation, with at least six months in the Firefighter-Paramedic classification.
- External appointees shall be subject to completing a 12-month probationary period.
- Candidates failing to meet any performance standard, expectation, or requirement during the probationary period may be released without right of appeal.

Examination Process & Assessment Center
All applications will be pre-screened. Due to the limited number of testing spaces and resources, only the most competitive and qualified applications will be moved forward to the Assessment Center. The assessment for Firefighter-Paramedic may include a written exam, practical exam, physical fitness exam, and/or an oral appraisal interview. The oral appraisal and written exercise generally examine candidates for their work experience, technical knowledge, judgment, and capacity to learn currently approved principles, practices, and procedures of fire/rescue operations. Each component of the Assessment Center is scored and weighted, and a passing score must be attained on each component of the assessment. Passing score is typically 70% or higher.
Eligibility List
Those applicants who successfully pass the examination process will be placed on an eligibility list for one year. Candidates on the eligibility list may be called at any time to participate in a selection interview with the Department to fill an immediate and/or anticipated vacancy in the Firefighter-Paramedic classification.
Pre-Employment Process
Upon the successful completion of a selection interview with the Department, which requires the Department’s recommendation to hire, candidates may be tendered a conditional offer of employment. All conditional offers are subject to satisfactorily completing the pre-employment process which consists of (1) comprehensive background investigation, (2) psychological examination, (3) medical examination, and (4) drug screen. Any candidate(s) failing to pass any one of the pre-employment elements 1-4 will be disqualified from the process and their conditional offer of employment shall be revoked.
