Special Requirements
Must be able to pass drug screen and criminal background check. Must have a Class B CDL, learners CDL, or able to obtain a CDL within 1 year of employment. Must provide a current driving record from the DMV. Must furnish own tools, possession of Virginia State Inspection is preferred or able to obtain within 6 months
Education &Experience
High school diploma or GED with coursework in automotive and diesel technology, or related field and considerable experience in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment including electronic diagnostic equipment used in the repair of cars, trucks, school busses, construction and maintenance equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery such as drills, presses, grinders, micrometers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, and welding equipment; ability to diagnose defects in the drive trains, chassis, and other components of automotive equipment; ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken parts; ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to make reports; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, frequently requires working in high, precarious places and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
