Description
Performs semiskilled work installing, repairing and maintaining streets, drainage ways and related facilities, sidewalks and catch basins, maintaining landscaping, operating a variety of equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.
Essential Functions
- Repairs and maintains streets; removes damaged sections of pavement; spreads asphalt and patches holes in street surfaces; removes loose materials from road surface holes.
- Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching.
- Digs trenches and ditches; cleans storm drains, catch basins, and manholes.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs drainage ways, catch basins, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, traffic signs, etc.
- Operates light equipment such as loaders, dump trucks, rollers, mowers and a variety of landscaping and street maintenance equipment.
- Hand grades streets, ditches, and driveways.
- Operates tamper, concrete saw, compacter, and similar equipment.
- Assists with setting up rooms and spaces for meetings and events.
- Mows grass, edges sidewalks and curbs, and weed eats; collects and removes leaves; performs related landscaping duties in the maintenance of right of ways and alleys; trims trees on streets and public property that may impose safety hazards; uses a variety of tools to remove dead, broken, and undesirable branches, trees, and shrubs.
- Uses a variety of hand tools.
- Maintains annual flower beds, baskets, and containers throughout the City; plants, waters, weeds, fertilizes, prunes, and replaces plants; maintains records of maintenance performed at each location.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control.
- Assists other crews as needed; performs special projects as assigned.

Special Requirements
Possession of VDOT Flagging Certification upon hire. Obtain Commercial Pesticide Applicator license within two years of hire. Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in general construction, maintenance, and/or groundskeeping work, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
General knowledge of streets drainage, buildings, grounds, utilities, landscape areas, and related construction, maintenance, and repair procedures; general knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of specialized equipment and hand tools to which assigned; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to read and write; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions, frequently requires stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and occasionally requires wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
