About the role

About the Department

Performs basic semiskilled work assisting in collection and analyzing samples, preparing samples, and recording data ensure compliance with environmental and public health standards. and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.  Supports the daily testing and monitoring of wastewater samples; and maintaining a clean, safe work environment.  Works under close supervision of the Chief Chemist.

Position Duties

  1. Collect and prepare wastewater samples for routine laboratory testing.
  2. Perform basic chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses following standard methods to monitor plant processes and treatment effectiveness.
  3. Accurately record test results and maintain organized lab documentation.
  4. Clean, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment. 
  5. Support senior laboratory technicians with additional tasks as directed.
  6. Adhere to all utility security policies and procedures, including those outlined in the Emergency Response Plan (ERP) and Risk and Resilience Assessment (RRA) documentation, to ensure the ongoing security and resilience of the water system’s infrastructure, operations, and water quality.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Biochemistry, Biology, or related science field.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Participate in fieldwork in various weather conditions.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff.
  • Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and listening.
  • Following complex oral and written instructions, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong computer skills, knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn department related software programs.
  • Reliable and punctual attendance.

Other Qualifications

Work Environment
This position works in both indoor and outdoor environments.   Exposure to a variety of weather conditions, blood borne pathogens, loud noise levels, toxic gases, slippery surfaces, and corrosive chemicals; may work in high precarious places; susceptible to mechanical hazards associated with equipment and moving mechanical parts, and other hazards due to risk of electrical shock and vibration.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders; balance, push materials; and exert up to 25 pounds of force.
  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing tasks at ground level and overhead.
  • Standard vision to read printed manuals, materials, and work instructions with the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Hearing and speech to communicate in-person and over the telephone or radio.
