About the role

About the Department

Provides support to the Community Services Department in daily Library and/or Navasota Center operations.
Library - Duties include assisting patrons, cataloging and processing new books, repairing damaged books, and assisting with events.
Navasota Center - Assists and oversees rentals and helps with events and programs.

Position Duties

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
1. Reports to: Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Services Director.
2. Directs: This is a non-supervisory position.

EXAMPLES OF WORK
Library:

  • Prepares new books and materials for shelving;
  • Provides reference services to library patrons, including assisting in the selection of pleasure reading, responding to reference questions, and assisting in locating specific books;
  • Provides assistance to patrons with copying, faxing, and printing, as well as assisting with computer related questions;
  • Repairs and cleans damaged books, including laminating, replacing, or mending covers;
  • Shelves library materials in correct order;
  • Answers and refers incoming telephone calls, and assists callers as needed;
  • Assists with special library programs, including summer reading program, story hour, and visits by school classes;
  • Assists patrons with completing library application for cards, and enters information into computer;
Navasota Center:
  • Will unlock building and gates for rental at contracted time;
  • May set up tables and chairs if needed;
  • Will be available to answer questions from renter or other assistants;
  • Will check area prior to rental to ascertain that building and grounds are in good condition; will attempt to rectify any area that is not in good condition.
  • During rental, the attendant will check on the activity from time to time to be certain that all rental policies are being followed;
  • Will answer telephone during the rental;
  • May be asked to perform light clerical duties as needed;
  • Shall supervise cleaning of hall so that building is not damaged;
  • Shall assess any damage done by the renting party, the time of conclusion of the event, and report this information to the Parks and Recreation Manager;
  • Will secure facility and grounds after all individuals have left;
  • Will assist with programs as needed;
  • Will utilize recreation software to make reservations and register people for programs.
Other Important Duties*
Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Skill/Ability to: Skill to communicate in a customer-friendly and helpful manner. Ability to follow written and oral directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate effectively and tactfully with the public; read warning signs, labels and devices. Lift and carry 30 pounds and push and pull a minimum of 50 pounds of tables and chairs on carts. Sit and stand for extended periods of time while filing or supervising rental. Be responsible for securing building properly at conclusion of rental event; be capable of performing all duties alone, safely, and without assistance due to nature of job and limited personnel manning. Ability to perform various cleaning duties as assigned. Works well with adults and children; accurately process materials and enter data into computer; pay great attention to detail; understand and follow instructions; apply correct oral and written English; operate standard office equipment, including printer and computer; perform simple mathematical calculations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, organizations, schools, volunteers and the general public.

Minimum Qualifications

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school graduation or GED. A minimum of one year of experience in a customer service function providing service and/or information to customers.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
Appropriate Texas Driver License.
American Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED *Preferred*
