About the Department
The Policy & Finance Intern supports special projects at the City of Mound to gain practical experience in governmental accounting, budgeting, policy, and customer service functions. This internship is designed for undergraduate students or recent graduates pursuing a degree in public administration, finance, accounting, business, or a related field who are interested in careers in public finance. This position can work up to a maximum of 20 hours a week with a minimum requirement of 5 hours per week. The internship will run from May to August.
Position Duties
- Assist with data entry, filing, scanning, and records management in accordance with retention requirements.
- Help prepare spreadsheets, reports, and financial analyses using Microsoft Excel and other financial software.
- Assist staff with audit preparation activities.
- Research public finance policies and best practices to inform finance policy updates.
- Assist with budget preparation and capital improvement tracking.

Minimum Qualifications
- Current undergraduate student pursuing or recent graduate with a degree in public administration, finance, business, or a related field.
- Completion of at least two years of college coursework preferred.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial terminology.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications- Prior office, customer service, or administrative experience.
- Interestinpublic service and public finance.
- Experience working with spreadsheets, conducting policy research, and working independently.
