About the Department

The City of Monticello is currently accepting applications for a winter seasonal employee to help with general clean-up and maintenance work from approximately mid-January through March with opportunity to continue into the summer. The winter hours are Monday-Friday 6:30 AM- 3 PM. This posting will remain open until filled.

General Statement of Duties:  Performs duties involving manual labor, maintenance and the safe operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the performance of the maintenance tasks.
 
Supervision Received: The work is performed under the supervision of the Street Superintendent or Street Foreman.
 
Supervision Exercised:  None.

Position Duties

  • Operates a variety of hand power-operated tools, equipment, and vehicles engaged in the on-going maintenance and repair on city streets and other public properties.
  • Performs a variety of manual and skilled tasks, including mowing and trimming of grass and bushes, picking up litter, emptying trash cans, and raking leaves.
  • Operates small tractors for the purpose of mowing and grading.
  • Operates a gasoline engine driven string trimmer and push mowers.
  • Repairs, maintains and replaces broken posts and signs.
  • Performs miscellaneous painting and staining.
  • Sweeps walks and parking areas.
  • Trims trees.
  • Cleans and maintains restrooms as necessary.
  • Waters trees and grass.
  • Operates a City pickup truck.
  • Maintains small tractors, string trimmers, push mowers, and related equipment.  Including but not limited to: Washing, cleaning, performing oil changes, greasing, replacement of broken parts and adjustments, and sharpening of mower blades.
  • Assists other City employees as required.
  • Performs work at the city's compost facility.
  • Performs other tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Moderate knowledge of the principles of operation and servicing of light equipment and power tools.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in light equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in light equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Ability to perform minor painting and carpentry tasks incidental to other assignments.
  • Ability to perform manual labor associated with the ongoing care and maintenance of City streets and public property.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with the general public.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is mainly outside involving exposure to all weather conditions and abnormal working hours.
  • The work requires exposure to workplace hazards such as chemical and fume exposure from equipment operation and chemical application. Noise exposure related to equipment operation. Additional physical hazards include exposure to dust, potential electrical shock and extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, hail and wind.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB

  • Hear and speak effectively to communicate in person or by phone with city staff and the public.
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Use large motor skills to perform manual and maintenance work, involving regular standing, walking, bending, moderately heavy to heavy lifting and carrying, twisting, turning, climbing and maintaining balance, crouching, standing, walking, kneeling, reaching, working at heights of over 10 feet and pushing and pulling.
  • Frequently reach with hands and arms and use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.

Other Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent and a valid Class D Minnesota driver's license with safe driving record. 
  • Previous work experience and/or training relative to the maintenance and repair of public property is preferred.
