About the Department

Do you enjoy working outdoors and being part of the action behind the scenes at games and community events? Park Attendants supporting Athletics and Events play an important role in preparing and maintaining Missoula’s athletic fields, courts, and event spaces so they are safe, clean, and ready for play. This position helps create positive experiences for teams, participants, and spectators across a wide range of recreational and competitive activities.

Park Attendants assist with field and court setup, facility cleaning, minor maintenance, and event support, including set-up and tear-down and maintaining restrooms and common areas. Working both independently and as part of a team, this role offers active, hands-on work and the opportunity to contribute to the success of tournaments, games, and community events throughout Missoula’s parks and recreation system.

Position Duties


  • Provide janitorial and athletic maintenance services throughout Missoula parks and Fort Missoula Regional Park athletic fields, including refuse pick-up, basic landscaping, cleaning restrooms, painting, minor repairs of park fixtures and simple construction.
  • Maintain ballfields, soccer fields and tennis courts, including installing all necessary components, pitching rubbers, home plates/bases, nets, etc., dragging talc lines, cleaning dugouts, courts, and other associated areas.
  • Assist with setting up and maintaining athletic field/court regulations for various sports, such as: softball, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, ultimate frisbee, tennis etc., to meet standards and codes for competitive play. 
  • Communicate with a variety of groups, including participants, parents, coaches, etc.
  • Support special events by maintaining restrooms, garbage management, and the set up and tear down of events.
  • Provide maintenance for department grounds and vehicle shop, including cleaning vehicle equipment, grounds, and snow removal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of simple construction and maintenance projects, including the use of equipment, materials, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of turf, trees planting, plant propagation, and general landscaping maintenance.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, including risk management techniques to reduce exposure to injury, damage and liability.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions, while working independently with minimum supervision.
  • Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365 and social media, with the ability to learn job specific applications and equipment.
  • Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
  • Skill in creating educational materials, publications, and written reports.
  • Ability to lead tours and volunteer events.
  • Ability to operate small power equipment, hand tools, and light equipment in a safe and effective manner.  
  • Ability to learn City and departmental policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Ability to learn Missoula’s open space, parks, and urban forestry systems; Montana’s native plants, invasive weeds, and animals; athletic field and court regulations and competitive play standards.

Working Conditions:

  • Positions require the ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.
  • Duties are frequently performed under conditions where noise, heat, dampness or cold are unavoidable.
  • Work environment may involve occasional exposure to uneven and steep terrain, occupational hazards, biohazards, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Other Qualifications

  • Any combination of training and experience in construction, landscaping, facility maintenance or another relevant field.
  • Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must have a valid Montana driver’s license with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.  (Valid out-of-state driver’s license are acceptable for students)
